Assist blade question.. any users?

#1

Post by LDB »

I am interested in the Assist as an EDC all purpose knife with the bonus of the glass breaking tool if needed. The photo suggests to my old and not quite 20/20 eyes a small unground protuberance at the tip of the blade. If that's so it would seem to defeat the all purpose everyday usage and put the knife into a specialty usage category which I guess is the intention. So, to those who know more than I, is that how the blade is and if so can you still use it for anything/everything on a daily basis or do you need a second knife?

That is how my Assist is. I've seen pictures of various models, and I think the Assist 1 didn't have that lip. Maybe you can find one of those or make some sort of trade.

It seems like you could also just reprofile it to be sharp.

The Rescue models don't have it, so that is an option minus the glass breaker.

One thing to note is that the Assist is a very wide knife. It is probably a half inch from the outside of one scale to the other.

That little "nub" depreses on a spring type mechinism(inside of the handle) to make the window punch come out. This also helps to not cut the person when making a rescue type cut.

It is a specialty knife. The nub serves the same purpose as the "blob" on the tip of bandage scissors, to prevent the tip from cutting a person whose clothing needs to be cut. Makes for a very safe rescue knife, but does make it less than ideal as one's sole EDC.

The OP didn't mean automatics or assisted openers. He is referring to the model, Spyderco Assist which is 100% manual. CRK Umnumzaan is also manual opening. :)

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't thought about that being what caused the glass breaker to extend. I was looking for a single knife for everyday use plus the glass breaker and ability to cut seatbelts. I haven't needed to do so yet but have been no more than a few minutes away from it a couple of times. I guess I just need to get a knife I like and a separate rescue tool.

The Spyderco Assist I makes for an outstanding rescue tool and offers features not found on Spyderco's other rescue knives.

I carry my Assist I Orange FRN whenever I drive. I also carry additional :spyder: s, such as a Spyderco Delica4 Black FRN PE and SE, for general cutting needs and save the Assist I for its intended purpose.

Yes, it appears I'll need to carry something else if I'm carrying the Assist. Actually I'll probably just keep it in my vehicle and carry just one something else, maybe one of the Salt series or maybe the Byrd Wings G10 to have both blade edges available.

There was an Assist II that did not have the nub at the tip. It had a short straight plain edge near the tip and would actually be a pretty reasonable EDC but would be less "safe" than the Assist I. IIRC, it did not have the glassbreaker. It was disco'd several years ago.

Yeah, give me the Assist 2 with an Endura blade and I'm sold!
