Bushcraft Handle completed!

#1

Post by Hector Castro »

Here is the handle I made for my Bushcraft blade blank. It is made of Desert Ironwood. I have to say, this is the hardest wood I have ever dealt with. I ended up using a carbide burr in my drill press to shape it. It ate 40 grit sand paper like a piece of carbon steel.

Shots of the top and the bottom. I corrected for the poor lighting conditions. The lines in the wood are gold and brown in person.

Great job Hector Castro. I wanted to get one of those blanks, but I could have never done that with it. It's gorgeous. You should be very proud.

Wow! You did a great job recreating the correct handle shape. And that wood is amazing.

Thanks. that is what I was shooting for. I wanted to keep it as close to the real thing as possible. It wouldn't be a Spyderco Bushcraft if it did not fit your hand the same as the original.

Beautiful work Hector. Very nice selection of wood, and you did an excellent job of bringing the best out of it.

Thank you all for the kind words. I agree that this is a beautiful wood, but you really have to work for it. I told myself that I would not be building another knife handle out of this stuff, It is hard and hard to work with, but I just saw the release of the Damascus VG-10. I think that mule will deserve a Desert Ironwood handle!

Thanks for all the great comments.

This stuff is tougher that I ever thought wood could be.

Gorgeous!!! :D
I have a couple of bits of ironwood, but not big enough for this sort of handle, and to be honest, I have been saving them for "that special project", so have never tried working the stuff. Whatever you had to do, it looks like it worked well! It has sure taken a nice finish.

Thanks for sharing! :)
