Color of next forum knife?

#1

Post by Sequimite »

There have been no votes cast in the last few days so the voting on preference for the next forum knife model is done. Out of 162 votes, 84 were for the FRN UKPK and 78 were for the G10 Manix2.

The closeness of the vote is perhaps more notable than the winner. I'll break this down into two tracks in order to end up with a first preference (UKPK) and a second preference (Manix2).

Regarding the G10 Manix2, I really need some input from those with serious experience as to what colors of G10 are available and if Micarta, or other materials having similar costs and machining properties, should be included as choices.

Regarding the FRN UKPK, since any single color can be used, we need nominations for particular colors. When making a nomination a picture must be included of the color in question. For example, if I were to nominate hi viz green I could include a picture from my bike:

Is a FRN Manix 2 out of the question?

For a number of reasons it was previously decided (by forum vote) that only Golden made models would be considered. The FRN Manix will be made in Japan.

I must have missed that.

Anyway, not sure what's available in G-10, or the relationship between color and price. For the FRN UKPK my choice would be white like the Endura below...

I've been in and out for a while and excuse me for not doing research, but is this an informal wish or will the results of the voting actually be taken seriously by Spyderco?

Personally, and no offence to our fellow international forumites, but I would prefer a Manix 2 to a UKPK. I believe I voted in the past as much but I just thought it was something fun to do and hoping Sal and crew would consider our input.

BTW, I loved the purple FRN on last year's Native and would love to see purple or lime green G-10 this year. FWIW.

I like the high-vis green idea ... the current FRN colours are OK but I was disappointed that they were so muted - nothing very bright and colourful.
My spydies: Squeak, Tenacious, Terzuola, D'Allara, UKPK CF peel-ply pre-production, UKPK CF smooth pre-production, UKPK G10 orange leaf-blade, UKPK FRN grey drop-point, UKPK FRN maroon leaf-blade, Bug ... all PE blades :)

Informed wish.

Since Sal encourages this sort of wishing, I though quantifying forumite wishes might help to make those wishes come true.

Hi-vis green is very close to toxic green which would be treading on USN forum knife territory. I would prefer something else, perhaps a more muted grass green. I do like the yellow orange above. Navy blue would be great too.

I would go for the bold colours as well. Hi vis green would be great (the colour of my bicycle) as would the yellow/orange.

Several of the knife components websites have good color charts. AKS and HT leap to mind but there must be plenty of others?

Should we not be picking two colors? In my opinion, some colors simply do not compliment the texture of the knife (ie volcano grip FRN vs. G-10). For example, I think white looks GREAT on the volcano-grip textured FRN, as seen in many of the previous sprint runs, but would look utterly terrible on G-10.

As for me, I really don't care what color the knife is. Both make outstanding EDC choices regardless of color.

I like SUDS's idea- Golden Yellow!

But as for the Toxic Green idea, I don't think it would be treading on the USN at all. Remember that the USN color was taken directly from the Toxic Green Jester made several years ago.

Custom FRN is relatively inexpensive, custom G10 VERY expensive, so we're picking a custom color for the FRN UKPK and are looking for what G10 and possibly Micarta colors are easily available.

Oh $H1T, I blew that big time. In the video Wouter posted Eric refers to the FRN Manix2 as a US made knife. Since I left it off the model selection poll it didn't get a chance to be selected.

However, since it may not be out this year, I guess we can ignore it.
