Change in taste

It seems like i'm feeling some burn out on the whole tactical folder scene. I grew up with your typical hunting folders and when i started getting back into knives i was immediately drawn to the more tactical style folders....something that looks like it fell out of GI JOE's gear bag. For a while i had an obsession with black blades and tanto blades, and i flat out won't carry anything without a pocket clip (this has to do more with accessibility and the other crap i carry in my pockets).

Now it seems like i'm getting back to my roots and i'm yearning more for classic knives with stainless bolsters and classic hunting knife style blades. I have a deep fondness for the "skinner" style blades (whatever the technical name is). I've been looking at pics of old Persians and drooling on myself. I'm also a late comer to the whole Kiwi craze and i'm on the hunt for one of those. Now with the anniversary edition Delica coming out, i'm really wanting one BUT i don't want a collectors knife that cost a fortune and would be stupid to carry.

What i'm getting at is, i'd love to see a line of knives brought out that have classic looks with modern ergonomics and pocket clips...modern steel, and that unmistakable Spyderco style. I'd love to see a lot of the older original Spyderco designs revamped and brought back out as sprint runs.

I'd really love to see a custom Caly 3 with some titanium bolsters and ivory scales...

Me too, but I doubt it will happen, at least not on that scale.

Used specimens of the C83 Persian sometimes turn up at a decent price, and without the trauma of deflowering a new one. ;) Sal has already committed to not one but two new runs of the C83, one pretty much identical to the original except for scale color, the other with a ffg blade and bolsterless G10 handle. Hopefully, the Sage 4 will use the Mar/McBurnette midlock and have an "Al Mar" style long front bolster. Bit small, perhaps, for a skinner, but no smaller than the Delica. While the deep discounts have disappeared, Kiwis and Kopas can still be found fairly easily at prices no worse than their normal street price. . C105 Persians show up occasionally on eBay an the BF Exchange forum.

As for other models, I still think Spyderco (and JD Smith) missed the boat by not putting double bolsters on the C58 J D Smith Sprint Run and I'd love to see a Stretch II with front bolsters. Caly 3 would work too, and the Dragonfly might work as well.

I don't usually care too much about bolsters but I totally agree with you on the JD Smith, Paul. That would be stunning. With a smooth micarta scale.

If the ivory is all from reclaimed pre-ivory-ban billiard balls, that would be fine.

Yeah i'm not saying go shoot elephants

I'd be happy with mother of pearl, and i'd LOVE to see some big tiger eye scales like these:

But yeah that's probably asking for an expensive collectors knife...

Interior mammoth ivory is about as "pre-ban" as one can get.

I've grown to appreciate more classic designs in the last year too. I used to carry more tactical type knives, and cheap Gerbers, etc. But once I got into Spydercos, I started to appreciate knives a lot more.

I used to think the Persian looked like some kind of cowboy, biker knife. But now it looks beautiful. I can't wait for the Persian sprint!

And is A-OK in my book. Just out of my price range...

I feel that most of us will go through changes in our knife needs/desires or carry prefaces. I myself needed to go back to my roots, which was a slip joint. I love my pocket knives, actually SAK's and Case's. So here I am with a pocketful of happy and yet I felt I "needed" a no holds bar, s-h-t-f knife. So I now carry my beloved Native SE and a SAK or my Soddie, happy family :D
learning it the hard way...

I love bolsters, natural handle materials or nice micarta like on Viele or Viele2. I do not think that any models with bolsters left in Spyderco line-up. Once Sal mentioned that Spydercos with bolsters do not sell well :( . I was shocked when in December C105 was discontinued and it is already catching over MSRP on the auction.
Certainly I would love to see Spydercos with bolsters back in production.

I can certainly see where bolster style knives are a niche market and are certainly not "in" right now. It does seem like the general Spyderco fanbase is centered around tactical/performance folders and not so much true pocket knives, regardless if they have pocket clips or not. Maybe i'll have to pick up a Case or two to fill my classic knife fix.

For me its the more tactical blades, but thats more because I´m into the more mordern material look. I think its somewhat like the same reason I ride a supersport motorcycle instead of a chopper. Sleek lines, ´fast´ appearance and modern materials.

That doesn´t mean that I don´t like the more classic knifes (or bikes) however. I think they are very beautiful. But more like beautiful to look at in a nice wooden display case, not in my pocket.
For use and EDC its the more modern look for me. Maybe I´m just to young for the classics growing up with Ipods, computers and videogames ;)
