painting g-10 handles ?

#1

Post by msierant »

greetings all,
dumb question of the day. has anyone out there ever "painted" g-10 handle slabs? looking to make mine either desert tan or OD from the black. any suggerstions on the type of paint, prep-work, sealing etc would be appreciated. tried it on aluminum with poor results. thanks and best regards to all.

Forget it won't hold up, best to have a new set of scales made.
We would rather be the knife in your pocket, because is "works" better, than the knife in your showcase, because it "looks" better.

Model builders paint cast resin models, which are pretty much G-10 without the "G". People have been known to paint Corvettes. So, in theory, the material can be painted. While I'd imagine painting G-10 would work better than painting FRN, there's no guarantee it would hold up for long under use.

My first thought was "Why? It would just wear off." As Deacon says, people paint models and cars and such that are plastic, but unless you are just going to display the knife, it WILL wear off.

It will wear off in time and expose the black underneath...might end up looking like some sort of camo.

The worst thing that could happen (assuming you do not foul up the workings of the knife) is that it will wear off very quickly. The best thing that could happen would be it wears off slowly and looks really cool (in your opinion).

I suppose if you use some sort of incompatible paint, you could ruin the scales, but I sort of doubt that is a high probability.

Be sure to post up some photos and report back on the long term results.
Thanks,

Can you do it... yes. Will it last... probably not very long.

If I were to attempt it, I would first make sure the surface is prepped extremely well, a nice sand blast or something to open up the surface and give the paint something to attach to. The issue with textured G-10 is you cant just sand it or you might flatten it out... unless that is a goal as well in which case I would suggest 120 grit or something similar. Make sure it is SUPER clean, no oils, grease, etc on the scales. A couple coats of paint would be all I would do. Adding a clear or something is going to add thickness and depending on the model could cause you issues i.e. the manix where the cage goes, very tight tolerance and having paint rubbing off will cause issues.

As said above, what knife are you working with? If spyderco released that model in another color perhaps someone would trade you scales?

Yeah people paint model cars, and then put them on shelves and in glass cases. If they handed them over to a 7 year old to pay with, you can guess what they'd look like in a week.

I don't know about G10 but if you had a lighter color FRN i'm almost certain you could dye it another color, but probably only to black unless you had white or clear FRN. RC car guys have been dying their rims with RIT fabric dye forever and it soaks right in and those wheels are mostly nylon.

For the record, I was not talking about model cars. I was talking about the real thing. Ever hear the saying "wrap your *** in fiberglass - drive a Corvette"? :D 'Vettes, as well as surfboards and fiberglass boats, are very close to G-10. All are, at least occasionally, painted to some degree. Know I've seen an older 'Vette in this area a few times with the hood and deck lid done up in "sword and sorcery" type artwork and I don't think it's peel and stick. As has been mentioned scrupulous prep work is the key, or at least without it you don't stand a chance of success.

Corvette bodies use polyester resin, G-10 uses epoxy resin which is much tougher and more costly. Both can be painted just fine, but the Corvette in your pocket will lose its paint faster than the folder in your display case. Which is to say that the paint is thin and will wear off in normal use of a knife, less so in normal Corvette use.
