XHP Manix needs love in Golden

#1

Post by quattrokid73 »

Last night I was getting up from a bench in the train station and my messenger bag pulled my Manix 2 XHP out of my pocket. It fell to the tiled floor below, and I quickly scooped it up and out of sight. I didn't have time to inspect it until I got home, since I didn't want to draw attention from the large police presence.

Anyways...The blade rattles back and forth now even though the pivot is tight. What gives? Surely the hard use Manix 2 should be able to take such abuse. I'm wondering if it hit "just so" in a way that knocked something out of whack. Tht said, I don't know what is wrong because the pivot is nice and snug. The lock seems fine as well.

So, this is my first knife that needs to head to Golden for repair. I'd like to know how you guys package your knives to make sure they arrive safely for the Spyderco crew? I'll be sending one or two knives for sharpening as well.

Thanks, Adam

PS. UKPK DP is proving to be the perfect EDC knife for me.

I had a similar problem with my Manix 2 out of the box. It had excessive play when open and closed. It's still being repaired. I miss it. :(

Tightening the pivot won't get rid of the play because of the bushing system the Manix 2 uses, so sending it in is the best solution. I suggest emailing Spyderco's customer service, just to let them know you're sending it in. Your should send the knives in a box, individually wrapped in some bubble-wrap. Maybe add some newspaper to fill any empty space in the box so the knives don't rattle around. Include a note describing the problem too.

Sorry to hear about your Green Manix 2. With my Blue Manix 2 the blade had slight side to side movement. I took it apart and filed the bushing a bit and that solved that problem. Maybe you didn't notice the movement before yours was dropped but gave it a very close inspection once you came home from the train station? I'm sure the SpydieCrew will sort it out for you and it will come back solid.

I hear a lot of manix 2 have slight blade play in the closed position. My manix 2 in 154 cm has it too but when opened has absolutely none. Not an issue for me but I can see that it would bother some.

@quattrokid: did you check for blade play when it was closed before you dropped it?

Hi guys I finally got to register it was difficult in the past as I only use a Gmail address, now it much easier being able to register with a free email account.Anyway I'm happy to be here and love all things spyderco in-particular I love my Manix 2 XHP.

Having taken mine apart I can only see one thing that may cause excessive blade play, someone forgot to put in one of the two bronze washers, though that would be evident right out of the box highly unlikely but not impossible.

I can't see anything that would cause this by just dropping, unless a washer shattered, again highly unlikely but not impossible.

There's another possibility the distance between the liners at the pivot point is out of tolerance mine with no play side to side open or close is: 3.5 mm though not 100% accurate as my vernier is not calibrated it gives you an idea.I think this is determined by the hight to the shoulder on the pivot screw, where the keyed liner "IIRC" sits,in a pinch a very thin teflon washer could take out any play,if you didn't want to send it off but like others have said best leave it to the pro's at Golden.

A not so good picture of the parts:

I have the S90V CF version of this knife and noticed early on it had some play. Tried tightening the pivot screw, as stated above this failed to have any effect. Haven't thought too much of it, may check to be certain both washers are installed.

The blade play was not there before. I can hear a slight rattle when shaking the knife. "S" happens, no biggie sending to Golden. I have some knives for sharpening anyway.
