A VIVID Awakening: Very glad to be alive

#1

Post by JD Spydo »

For the past 3 nights I've been forced to sleep in my truck. A buddy of mine was also temporarily homeless and was sleeping in his van parked close to my truck. We were under a very well lit streetlight in a parking lot. At first none of this bothered me because I had done this on a few other occasions But on Wednesday night/early Thursday morning at around 3:00am I awoke to something I usually only read about in newspapers. I had my driver side truck window rolled down because it was a rather hot night.

I was awoken suddenly by 2 very hostile sounding voices and when I opened my eyes I was facing the barrel of an automatic pistol. The 2 men both talking bad english said for me to give them my money. Knowing immediately that I was in a desperate situation I told them I would comply. Thinking my life was going to end soon I sort of went into a panic mode and grabbed my Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri machete type knife ( about 15 inches in length) and immediately went into a rage. One of the perpetrators tried to open my truck door at the same time and did begin to come into the cab and I took a swing a him and he barely dodge the edge of that blade. That guy did have some type of a knife on him and I did catch a glimpse of it but everything happened so fast I can't really say if it was a folder or fixed blade.

I then at that instant went forward and went after both of the scumbags only armed with the Gurkha knife thinking that I only had a slim chance of defending myself and would probably ultimately get shot in the process. Much to my pleasant surprise both men at that time immediately fled at a rather rapid rate and put a lot of distance between themselves and me. I was yelling at them at the top of my lungs and acting like I was losing it and I truly believe I scared the **** out of them and turned the tables in my favor. The guy with the gun ran around to the other side of the truck which really amazed me and the other guy lunged toward me with what he had and I immediately went after him with the Gurkha Kukri trying my best to do all the damage to him I could. He just barely dodged the full force of my Gurkha which deeply disappointed me. He was fast because I thought for sure I was going to make blade contact with the dirtbag on that attempt. The guy with the gun then went behind a trash dumpster on the other side of my truck but kept the gun aimed at me. At this point I was shocked and surprised that he hadn't shot at me yet.

I then ran toward my buddy's van which he was sleeping in very close to my truck. I then went and beat on the side of his van with the Gurkha and he awoke quickly and barreled out of the side door with a weapon of his own. At that point the 2 perpetrators went into "coward mode" and both fled immediately. At that point my buddy told me that I was bleeding profusely and I looked at my left hand and sure enough my thumb on my left hand had been cut deeply. Again I did see scumbag #2 with a knife but I didn't remember seeing him using it on me but it all happened so unbelievably fast that it still has me somewhat shook up almost days after the fact. But the scumbag must have got lucky and laid a cut on me because he obviously cut me pretty deep on that thumb and we went to an emergency room here in Kansas City. I had 3 emergency room doctors attend to my wound right away.

Again I'm still very shook up over the incident and my anger level is the worst it's been in years  . The streetlight was so well lit that I can easily identify them if I see them again. Let me tell you folks when stuff like this happens to you it's really a harrowing experience needless to say. We are living in very dangerous times folks and we all need to be very alert and ready at all times. I thank GOD above for directing my mind to do the right thing to save my life. I thank my buddy for getting me medical attention as fast as he did. Crime is real folks and don't think for one second that it can't happen to you or yours. :(

Man! You did well, considering you were outgunned and outnumbered initially! I Hope your hand will heal fully. I also hope you find a safer place to park.

Have you considered camping at one of the state parks perhaps? Clinton Lake, or Perry on the KS side, or Blue Springs/Jacomo lake, or Lotawana maybe? I'm thinking any of those would be safer than under a streetlight.

Holy crap, I'm glad you made it out alive. That certainly is a nightmare scenario. I hope they catch those scumbags and put them away. I think you need a firearm close by.

Wow JD, I'm just relieved to hear that the worst you came out with was a cut on your hand. I hope the rest of your nights out there are peaceful and that somehow, some way those guys get theirs.

Ugh, what a distressing story. I'm glad you made it out with minimal injuries. Hope you find someplace better to sleep soon! :(

That's funny you would mention the "Blue Springs" area. Because I lived there before I moved here to the city. Before I moved I had a shooting incident take place just 3 blocks from where I was living. It was apparently a drug deal that went bad and the perps shot 2 young guys in broad daylight. And keep in mind folks Blue Springs has had a sterling reputation for being a great place to live for many years. But as you can see this crap is showing up virtually everywhere.

I"m heading to the country again as soon as I get some stuff sold and some loose ends tied up. And I will be fully armed when I get there too. But don't deceive yourself brother because evil is showing up everywhere.

As this economy gets worse ( and it's going to get much worse unfortunately :( ) we are going to be seeing much more mayhem in the days ahead.

Glad things worked out pretty much for the good. (could have been a lot worse than a cut thumb).

I have heard a lot of BS from self proclaimed "tough guys" and have always maintained that a person never really knows what they will do if someone shoves a gun in their face (or something along those lines). I am glad your instincts led you to the correct course of actions.
Thanks,

JD,
Sounds like God was on your side! You handled that situation extremely well. I tend to agree with SouthNarc that aggression really gets the job done when it comes to violent conflict. In the end, whatever you are both armed with, if you appear more aggressive/violent/F@(%3D up than they are, the intimidation factor is in YOUR favor. I have learned this through the years and find that simply being aware of this fact and paying attention helps to keep some situations from coming to a head at all.

Congrats on keeping your hide, and may God bless you with better luck in your interpersonal dealings.

INdeed JD. I know the area well, at least the KS side, and your location ID says GRain Valley which was why I suggested the lakes I did. If you are looking to move rural, PM me and I will pass along a place to look at on the KS side. (I'm from Larrytown originally, back when it was a decent place to grow up).

Hey Joe,

I'll pray for you my friend. You've always been a great guy here on the forums and I am glad you are still here. Seriously.

Be careful out there man. Times are tough. Stuff does get worse when times are tough.

I'm sorry you have had to sleep in your truck man. Actually I'll email you about that later. It's been a while since we've chatted.

God Bless you brother.
