Millie-- frame lock?

#1

Post by jlamb »

I am planning on making the military my next purchase, would it be considered a frame lock? I get a bit confused about liner vs, frame locks. It is my understanding that a frame lock is when you see the handle cut out and your hand puts the pressure on the lock. On the other hand a liner lock is not affected by grip or the handle???

Until recently all versions of the Military were liner locks. There is now an all titanium frame lock version and, from what I understand, there's another in the works that will combine a titanium frame lock right side with a G-10 left side.

As for the other, the line between frame and liner locks has been blurred. I'd call any knife that has a relief cut in the lockbar to allow it to flex a frame lock regardless of whether the lockbar is covered by a slab of something or not and any knife without such a cut a liner lock, even if there is nothing over the liner. But that's just me.

I'm interested in what you are saying, but finding difficulty understanding.

Can you provide examples (either photos or model names) of knives that
1. have this relief cut in the lockbar to allow it to flex
2. Do not have the relief you refer to.

I agree that some "liner locks" such as the Gayle Bradley are basically a frame lock with a decorative cover from my POV, but I think you are using a slightly different rationale.
Thanks,

SnG's have a frame lock like this...Alot of spyderco's have liner locks that have a solid frame outside of the liner that dont have any sort of slit in them.

Yes, as I noted, the line is very blurry, not like ten years ago when the locking liner of most liner lock knives was about the thickness of CD.

This photo shows the relief cut, marked by the yellow arrow, in the Sage II's lockbar...

Some framelocks, like the Volpe and those made by Chris Reeve, have the relief cut on the outside surface of the frame.

I don't have a shot handy of the CF Walker Lock Sage from that angle, but it would be an example of a knife that does not have that relief cut.

.
The second knife you mentioned is an exclusive run of 500 pieces with M4 steel for Knifeworks which is due out this month or next. All 500 pieces are presold. I've not heard anything about Spyderco making any more but obviously, anything is possible.
