I posted a questioning on sharpening in the General Discussion area, and saw a message that it would need to be approved by a moderator before it would show up. That was on Friday, and it has not appeared yet. Is there anyone I need to ping to request approval?

Your posts when you are new may be proof read by someone to ensure there is no trolling and the post meets the spirit of the board.
To tell you the truth though, Im not really sure who the Mod's are here since this forum is close knit and self moderated.
However you were able to post this thread, so Im not 100% sure.
Did you do a search? Or was your inquirey not answered with the search results?

IIRC Taz is the only mod that spend any time here, though Sal pops in once in a while.
