Calypso jr. - purchased again years later

#1

Post by spyderdog »

So my first ever spyderco purchase was a gray Calypso jr. that I got from a local outdoor store. I always liked the way it looked, but never really used it. Not really knowing much about spydercos or frn handles back then, when I carried it it kinda felt cheap. Plus the blade was off center which bothered me. Now i know off center blades are relatively common with this knife. I ended up and sold it.

Now, I can really appreciate a lightweight slicer. I was lucky enough to find a place that had some caly jr. ZDP's still in stock, so bought 2 :D Both arrived perfect, with nicely centered blades. What great lightweight slicers these things really are. I think the caly 3 is a great knife, but I really like these even more.

You are a lucky man to find both of those NIB. Would you care to share with us where you found them, and what they cost you?

Nice score man, I love the Calypso Jr. I have a gray one and it's fantastic.

Wow nice find!

I just plunked down my card and picked a black ZDP one up from a local army surplus store. What an impressive piece it is :)

Wow. Umm, yeah. I didn't pay that. I got both for $184 shipped. I believe they're gone now though. It wasn't a major store, and probably not even an authorized dealer.

I just picked one up on eBay for $65. They're out there and definitely worth looking for. This will be backup to my other ZDP, 3 micarta and 1 stainless Caly Jr. Can you tell I like the design? And I've given away 9 others of various flavors!

I just got my black VG-10 yesterday. Was lucky enough to get it for $40 off bf.com. Now I can give my black ZDP a break. I cannot stand to use my burgundy ZDP is that wrong?

Delica and Endura are great knives! They're the low priced crack samples that'll get you hooked on spyderco! Feed the need!

Nice score. I seldom carry my FRN Caly not because I wouldn't like it, but because I try to keep it in mint condition. Great little knife.

3rd

And as far as the Calypso goes, I love the design, but the clip kept pulling the FRN and pulled the blade toward the scale on the one I had. Tried both sides, bugged me to no end.

It's a great knife for sure. I keep hoping for a new run. My new hope is that there will be a Caly version of the FRN UKPK. Caly 4 perhaps???
