What knife size do you prefer?

#1

Post by Stephen »

Hi all, I'm making this thread to gauge the preferences of the forum members in terms of folding knife size. I thought it would be cool to see where everyone stands.

When choosing, I don't want you to make your pick based on a local law or ordinance restricting knife size. For the sake of the poll just imagine that no regulations exist. ;)

It would also be great if you said what basis you have for your preference.

Let's get it on!
My :spyder:'s: Tan M4 Manix!, P'kal, Rock Salt, Pink Endura CE, Orange Moran, USN Endura, Bug, Honeybee, FRN Cricket.

I like to carry more than 1 knife a largish one like my military dedicated to SD. An endura for utility. And finally a multi tool. I am still waiting for my persistence which will replace my endura as utility. might be getting a delica too

After years of carry I'm fond of a 3" blade, it's an excellent compromise all the way around.

I carry one of each size plus a multitool, but if only given the option I would roll with an Endura sized knife for the sandwich slicing potential.

I EDCed a 2" blade for some time and came to the result that it's sometimes simply too short, granted it performed as well as a 3" in 90% of the cutting jobs, but the 10% just bugged me. Now I'm EDCing a Rock Lobster or a FFG Delica and I gotta say the extra inch helps a lot. This is basicly my home/work EDC.
If I'm out on the town I like to carry something small and very discreet, in the end, the only thing I'll be cutting while on the town will be price tag. :p
And on top of those I always have a LB on my keys, just because I can.

One of each ideally, but as with those above I've found that sometimes you need a bigger blade and it's usually not that hard to carry two more inches of length.

Over here EDC is limited to 3-inches maximum and I've never really yearned for longer knives. Often I'll just need something to cut a packet or trim something and 2-inch or less with a decent steel would be fine :)

3.5 to 4.5 inch is best for me for folders.

I carry three different sizes. One small, one medium, and one large. I have them for different uses and it also depends on where I'm at. But if I had to choose, I'm more of a medium guy.

Everything I normally carry (2 knives) fits within the medium range. I try not to go below a 2.9" - 3" blade (Caly 3) and I often add a Para for a longer blade and/or heavier cutting chores. I've got a few Millies that get carried and used in the woods around the house or hiking.

My most carried knives are: C83 Persian with 3.5" blade, Caly3 and C105 Persian with 3" blade, and Kopa with 2.5". I found 3.5" is most used size for me. 3" can be fine for most of my cutting tasks, also it is a good size for travel knife, much less legal restrictions. And I love my Kopas with 2.5" blade, it is good for light tasks.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Voted for 2-3.5 but in truth my "limit" is the biggest that will fit comfortably across my back pocket. Currently the 3.5" Stretch and Schempp Persian are the largest which will do that, but its really more a factor of handle size than blade length and they have other features I require in a knife as well. If Sal can ever figure out how build a midlock that packs a 4" blade with a usable 50/50 choil into a 4.75" or shorter handle, I'll definitely give it a go. :D

3.5" is a great size for an EDC :spyder: I am really looking forward to the Caly 3.5 and Super Leaf.

I did not see "Endura sized" in the answer and would like to formally request it.

Seriously, the Endura seems to be my IDEAL size. For the life of me I can not understand or articulate why I seem to carry the Endura day after day in spite of the fact that I have so many other (more expensive) knives that would seem perfectly suited for my tasks.

For the record, I consider my Pacific Salt to be part of the "Endura" family.
Thanks,

When I first read the title I thought, "prefer for what?"

I can't say there is one size I prefer. I'm like many others here in that I carry more than one knife. I usually have a Ladybug in my change pocket for light work (e.g. paring a fingernail, cutting packing tape, etc) and one or two large knives (e.g. Manix2) for heavier work such as cutting boxes, rope, etc.

My favorite size is 3.5"-4" blade. I find that a longer blade can do most everything a shorter blade can do, but the opposite is not always true...at least not as efficiently as the longer blade.

With that said, I usually have two PE folders and one SE folder on me - one large, one medium and the SE is always either a Tasman or H1 Spyderhawk.

This week, that combo is my BG-42 Military, Krein'd D4W and Tasman Salt. Oh yeah, there's also a PE Ladybug on my keychain as well. :D
I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
