Hello Rtex, I would chose a Delica or Endura. They have been upgraded to vg-10 and they have a flat ground blade. Another good one is the calypso jr. lightweight with the vg-10 flat ground. These knives run about $30-45 dollars and are quality blades. Another one would be the almite navigator, it has a hollow ground vg-10 blade.

How much are you willing to spend, and what are your local blade length laws like? Intended uses (I assume general purpose). Do you love plastic handles or hate them? Metal, synthetics, etc...

Like the man said, the Delica is a good starter blade. But I probably wouldn't start there now.

The legal limit in texas is 5.5 inches. I know rtex and he should start with a delica or endura. Probably the endure.

Most of s started with the c11 Delica... then it got worse!

I currently own:
-Delica, Plain, FRN
-Calypso jr light, plain, frn
-Cricket, serrated, tufram(grab a '96 book until I get my scanner up)
-Dragonfly, plain, SS
-c35 Q(traded with J Smith for my Wegner jr), plain, standard

Next is a c36 Millie that I'm buying off Jeff/1911 when I get the cash...

I'd say any of my plain edge would be good for starters.

I'd go for either the light Endura or the light Delica, in PE. Each is a great knife, there's just 1/2" difference in blade length.

If that isn't for you, try the Mouse, Cricket or, for a traditional flair, try the Dyad Jnr. Blade-Art has the Dyad Jnr. for around $47.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I started with a Delica plain and carried it practically every day for 8 years. During that time I also bought a second Delica with a combo edge, two Enduras: 1 serrated and 1 plain, a Rescue serrated, and a Dragonfly serrated. I always preferred to carry the Delica though. It was a comfortable size for me, I guess. Now I am carrying a Native plain that I got about a month ago. The best thing for you to do if possible is go to a store that sells Spydercos and hold a few different ones, put them in your pocket to see how they fit/look to you, then buy them all. Just kidding, get the one(s) you like for your carrying needs. But BEWARE...once you get one you'll have to have more. Just ask anyone here.

Rtex,

I'm not sure I understand your last posted question. The Civilian has a 4-1/8 inch blade. I doubt you will easily find a $60.00 price on one. Also, it is a very specialized design. It is an awesome knife but probably not a good first Spydie choice. I think I would vote for a Calypso Jr. SS or lightweight if you can get one. They are discontinued but I think SFO has some. They are pricey but good service for your first. Your choice of course. Everybody's got to be someplace. Good thing we're not all the same place.

Caly Jrs. on the SFO page under 'Discontinued' are $90- for SS and $70+ for FRN. Both are very sweet knives.

There is a Calypso jr Lightweight serr on Ebay for $29 that would be a good choice.

I recommend the Delica. PE or SE, it's a perfect size for EDC. The size is small enough to not raise eyebrows, BUT it will perform what you ask of it.

I agree with many about the Delica. It wasn't until I already owned at least a dozen far more expensive Spyderco products that I got my first Delica. However, after using it for a few days I decided that if I had bought it first I may never have desired any other (although I think that this notion is probably WAY off).

Anyway, for me it is the ideal size for most tasks. It has wonderful ergonomics and cuts like a laser beam. No wonder it is one of the best selling knives Spyderco makes. I think that if after handling one you decide you like the style and feel of it, you should buy one and never look back.

You'll need to decide on plain edge, fully serrated or a combination edge (half of each style) and whether you want it with a blue or black handle. The newest versions say "VG-10" on the blade and this is a phenomenal blade steel. Good luck!

My first (and so far only spyderco) is a lightweight, plainedge Native. I got it at the Knife Trader in Lansing, MI for a steal at $45. I own a handful of knives (some utilitarian pocketknives, some not), but for the past few months the one I carry all the time and rely on is my Native. I'd bet on that model as a good first spyderco if you can get it cheap enough.
