Wife worked out my S90V Mule and got some chips

Post by demtek9 »

So the wife wanted to cut up some cardboard boxes that the automatic kitty box shipped inside. So I handed her the S90V Mule thinking she couldn't hurt the edge on that one...wrong! I got it back with a bunch of tiny dings/chips near the tip. I couldn't catch them in in a photo, they are so small, but i got them out with about 20 minutes on the ceramic stones. I only used the whites, so it took a little long.

There was probably sand and other crap in that cardboard, so I'm not unhappy with the Mule's performance. You should see her VG-10 Delica after she uses it. You'd think she tries to cut up bricks.

Anyway, If you want to really "test" you knife, just hand it over to the wife because they really will not baby them at all
...oh you know why!

I can't find a kitchen knife that my wife will not chip. We have 8 dogs, so she is always cutting a lot of meat, I don't know if she hits the bones or what, all I know is that I spend more time fixing her knives than sharpening mine...

Excellent real world usage! I love using my knives and I love when my wife shows any interest in knives in general.

I'd rather have my wife use a Mule as a utility knife in the kitchen instead of my good Wusthof Classic cutlery. I'm awaiting an S90V Mule with new scales from Tom Krein that is destined for the knife block. Hopefully, she'll reach for the Mule first!

Ditto right down to the Wusthof cutlery I've had for 20 years...since I was a kid and my mom blew out two serrations on my bread knife when she accidently slid it across the coffee pot 110v wire... :) And then my wife has managed to bend the tip of a pearing knife. I love my Wustoff Classic, but everyone else seems to use it like a hammer.

I'd be half tempted to say I'd like to see Spyderco hit the market again with some cutlery. I might be a buyer and let the family destroy the Wusthof. How is it that woman can destroy knives and men can spend 20 years with a knife and never ding it up? I thought we were supposed to be the brutes.

My wife has her own knife and she takes fairly good care of it since it's hers. But once in awhile she will ask to use one of mine and I know there has to be a reason she isn't using her own. I am hard enough on my knives by myself I don't need anyone to help me out. I am not sure if anyone has had to deal with cow's that get out of the pen and in to the alfalfa field? If you have you know there is one fix to that problem and it has ruined several of my knives.

I must admit I was whittling some seasoned Aussie hardwood(Blackbutt) with my s90v Manix 2 which had it's factory edge(razor, tree topping, hair splitting sharp) and it cut this timber like nobodies business, curls flying everywhere but the edge was chipped all the way along up to half a mm deep.

Either the timber was too hard or the edge was too thin or S90V is'nt as tough as other steels that I have dealt with? That being said it gets so sharp and the edge last so long(when you don't chip it :o ) I love this steel!

I have found that my S90V Spyders need to have a good "home sharpening" (coarse DMT, Fine DMT freehand- fairly steep, then a full 30 deg brown, white, UF on the Sharpmaker, then a final 40 deg- about 50 strokes per stone). After that, It just cuts, and cuts, and cuts, and...

In my experience (40 years) wives tend to think of knives as Leatherman MultiTools.
