Blue Stretch Mod

#1

Post by dorfinator »

Ok, first off the photo sucks, cuz all I have with me on the road is my iPhone. However, as you can see, I've put a silver clip on my Stretch that I "borrowed" from my Blue Manix to see how it would look.

I've already spoken to the factory and of course all of you Spyderco veterans probably already know that the company doesn't make a silver clip with a lanyard hole that fits the hole pattern.

However, as I'm not a big lanyard user, I'm liking the looks of the silver clip vice the black.

What do you all say?

BTW, I'm bored to tears in my hotel room.

I really like the way the silver looks.
Could you possibly drill a hole into it for a lanyard?

I'm sure I could if I had the proper tools as I don't think a hand held drill would do it justice. Then there's the finishing of the hole so it was tapered on both sides like the factory clips with lanyard hole.

If you like it go ahead and keep it the way it is. I like my clips black, so it's not my style.

How 'bout taking a Dremel to the black clip and making it...less black :p If you don't like it you could always order another black one from Spyderco.

I think its a personal preference as well. I like the black clips on my knives, and if they have to be silver I'll get them sandblasted. I recently did that with my manix 2 and persistence clip. I sent them off to someone to have them blasted and they came back looking excellent!

I hadn't thought about sandblasting. Great idea. Thanks!

Isnt that what the stretch comes with? They want to drill a hole in the silver one. But they make the silver clips with holes as well, (theyre on the pink and white delica 4's)

Well I don't doubt you but this is the email I got back from the factory:
To me,
The only silver clip we have that will line up with the screw holes for the Stretch does not have the lanyard hole in it. Putting that clip on will cover up your lanyard hole. Call us to order the clip or if you have any questions.

>To purchase a clip kit for your knife you can call the Spyderco Factory Outlet. We need to ask a few questions to make sure we get you the correct clip for your knife. Clips usually range between $3.95 to $7.95 and H-1 Salt Clips are $11.95 Shipping and handling is $1.95 (in USA) our store hours are Monday –Friday 10 am -6 pm and Saturday 10 am-5 pm Mountain Standard Time.

Well, it may be the only one they have in stock, but it's definitely not the only one they ever made. Some colors of Delica shipped with silver clips with the lanyard hole. Here's one of them, swapped onto my SE Stretch II...

I normally not a clip person, but this on rides clipped in my shoulder bag.

Would a Dremel or something similar with the appropriate wheel not work?

I strip all my clips. I think it looks better if it's done right and it just speeds up the inevitable.

The blade isn't black.
The screws aren't black.
The clip should not be black. Cool mod! IMHO, the silver looks great with the blue. Here's my old D4 with a sanded clip:

I chemically stripped the clip on my D4 wave because the black was chipping off. The resulting finish is dull and unobtrusive, and a lot more durable than the coating. It is easy to do, but the stripper needed a little help from a Scotch-Brite pad. I put it in a yogurt tub with liquid brush cleaner to soak, then scrubbed it with the pad. Voila!

Thanks Deacon for the photo. I'm liking that silver look a lot. Looks like others have some great hints on making this happen. :)
