how the Delica 4 chose me.

#1

Post by Chiba »

Hello all,

I'm new here and wanted to share my experience with my recent Spyderco knife purchase. I was in the shop and narrowed my choice down to the Delica 4 FRN and the Delica 4 with G10 handle. I stood there opening and closing both of them weighing the differences. the G10 is heavier, double the price with a better feel to the handle and flat ground blade. The FRN was nice and light with a thicker hollow ground blade. An other thing I noticed was while the g10 had the same VG-10 Steel (made in Japan) it was most definitely sharper than the FRN variety.

I still couldn't decide until one of them bit me. I wasn't paying attention as I was closing the blade. I bled quite a bit and jokingly said to the clerk

"I'll bet this happens like once a day here"

He replied "nope"

He gave me some paper towel to catch some blood and 2 band aids.

That blade was so sharp that I barley felt it cut my thumb in 2 places. Just as if I were bit by a :spyder: :)

Embarrassed, I accepted this as a sign and bought the G10.

As you can see, it's a beautiful knife. Whenever I pick it up, I give it the respect it deserves..

Welcome to the forum.

And either ou or the Delica made a good choice.

The G-10 is gorgeous. You found out why Spydies are such good slicers.

you are now one with your knife. You share a blood bond that no one can break. Kinda like James Cameron's Avatar hair penis. Enjoy.

Wow, what an overwhelming response, Thanks guys!

The James cameron and circular saw comments were hilarious.

As far as sharpening goes, I'm going to wait until it gets dull and then pick one up. I was looking at the sharpmaker and also the Gatco Ultimate Diamond Sharpening System. I've seen some youtube reviews and both look capable. Has anyone tried either/both?

A hint: don't wait. If you touch up the edge after use, it'll stay nice and sharp but if you waituntil it gets dull its much for difficult to sharpen

Welcome to the forum, you made an excellent choice!

can't speak about the Gatco, I like my Sharpmaker and you will find many enthusiastic threads about the Sharpmaker here.

as SecSpyral said, don't let it get too dull before you sharpen it.

Great choice.

I had that happen once while talking to a co-worker. I think my mistake was trying to hide the fact that it happened.

Wow love the Christmas colors. Yep, I had my G10 Delica for about an hour when I cut myself. I have pretty much decided I can't bond with a knife until its cut me. Good choice of knives.

Agree with Secspyral and Skatenut, don't let it get too dull. Don't know about the Gatco, but the Sharpmaker worked great for me when ressurecting the edges on my Fox folder and Gerber Trendy. Now I keep my Spydies and other nice blades touched up with a strop.

That FFG Delica sure looks sweet.

Congrats and welcome,

But, it was only trying to get your attention. And, since knives can't say, "Pick me! Pick me!" their only recourse is to give ya a nip. :)

Excellent choice! Congratulations! Sounds like you two will go well together.

And, yes, concur with the others with regards to keeping your Delica's edge well maintained and sharp. She'll give ya an even nastier bite if you let her get dull.
