Endura or Delica

#1

Post by texcaliber »

Which is the better knife Endura or Delica?

Also would you premote the wave or the standard for your choice of draw?

I am looking for opinions, so if I should look in another direction all together please let me know. All opinions are welcome.

This will be to replace my EDC. I am currently carrying a H&K Benchmade tanto. I like this knife's ability to be deployed from pocket easily strong side natural grip, or weak hand reverse-grip-flick single handed opening. I am not sure of the ability of the lock-back systems for this. Your input is valued.

I will need to train with my new system thoroughly, so I will need a matching trainer to my EDC upgrade.

As a side note, I love the blade look of the Native, but have no experience with the knife. This would be used most likely as a EDC utility system or backup blade for off-side carry:confused. If there is anything to know on this knife I would appreciate the Info.

Thank you,
tex

The answer to "Endura or Delica?" is another question: "Big or small?" The Endura has a lot more cutting edge. It really is a lot more pleasant to cut with. But I like the size of the Delica better in terms of carry and handling.

Well tex, ultimately it depends on the size knife you want to carry for edc. Between the two I prefer the Delica. If I am carrying a larger knife (endura size) I prefer to use my military or manix 2. The Delica is a very comfortable size and ergos are great. It doesn't weigh much at all. I have the G10 Full flat ground Delica right now, and a waved endura. I love playing with the waved endura and use and carry it occasionally.

What I would consider an ultimate edc knife (for me) would be an orange FRN Waved Combo edge Delica.

One of my Natives I use for yardwork and my forum native for special occasion carry. I love the Full flat grind on it for slicing. The standard native does well for many tasks, but I still prefer a delica to it for edc.

The wave is an awesome feature to use when drawing a knife. It doesn't take much to get use to either. If you need to see it done just watch some youtube vids.

ditto.the delica fits nicer in the pocket and the endura has more blade.i would compare the delica size to like a mini grip or a sequel and the endura more the size of an 800 afck.they both have the back lock and i can't close them with one hand like i can a side lock like the military.i really like the side locks for the convenience of opening and closing.even though the military is large for a folder i'm partial to it over the caly.delica, and endura.just my $.02.

I have had a serious problem with a liner lock Kersawe which left a nasty scare on my trigger-finger. I am not foreboding the Line lock system. Just saying it makes me nervous.

A backlock can be closed by putting your index finger forward (toward the pivot), depressing the lock bar, jerking the knife forward so that the ricasso of the blade hits your index finger, turning the knife, and finishing the close with your thumb.

I never close a backlock with 2 hands.

The HK BM is a superior knife to the Delica and Endura. It is twice the price as I recall, and that isn't for nothing. if you are looking for something you will like as well as the BM look at manix2, paramilitary, Sage, etc.

Now back to these two. Delica is better in the pocket for sure. For me the size Endura in rarely if ever needed over the Delica. For my hand Delica is more comfortable. I have skinny hands.

I am a huge fan of the Benchmade HK line... At least the old Snody stuff. However I would not say they are "superior" to the Endura and Delica. Yes you get more refined handle materials, but the Endura and Delica are classics.

I will say the HK, given its construction, might be a bit more heavy duty, as pointed out. If I was working with a knife, it might hard to replace with the knives in question.

Not sure what you are asking about drawing, however the Axis lock will be much smoother, and you will have to look at Spyderco's Ball Bearing Lock for something similar.

I like the Waved Endura, I prefer the non-Waved Delica. The Native is a great knife, however I would prefer the Delica for "back up" carry. I don't like a knife that has a choil like the Native, for that role.

The Endura is a pretty big knife. The Delica is a little knife that could. Really there is not much you can throw at a Delica and it can't handle.

Let me be the honest one here. Go with the waved endura unless you need a smaller knife.

I started with a waved Endura, then got a waved Delica and a nonwaved Endura G-10. They're all great and they all have a place in my edc rotation. It might just a matter of not what one to get, but what to get "first". :)

Another think to consider is your local blade length laws. Some people, like Mr. Janich, alter Enduras to meet their needs, or they use the Delica, to stay legal. In terms of MBC stuff you'll see porkman demos done w/ the Delica. For me, suddenly the extra inch of blade mattered less than whether the handle fit my hand well.

IMHO, No matter what you choose, you won't go wrong with Spyderco stuff.

I started with a delica and after 4 years of abuse I gave it to my buddy. I've bought and given away a few more since. I've been beating on an endura for a while (early/mid 03?).

The endura should be able to handle anything you throw at it.

i dont think one is better than the other just because they have always been the same knife from the beginning and now, just one is a bit smaller and one is a bit bigger.

put one of each in your hand and youll find out which is better for you.

I think I will put an order in today at my local gunshop for an Delica , Endura and a Native.
I have yet to decide on the edge types. But most likely go with a plain. I may see if the Native can be ordered with a more utilitarian serrated edge. Maybe no?
Thanks for the help.

As for markg;
Not sure what you are asking about drawing,
I mean that I carry my knife strong side(right) front pants pocket with tip up. After a startle reflex I can draw my primary edge with either hand. The right is normal deploy, while grabbing the handle a simple thumb to stud deployment. While grabbing the knife with my left hand(thumb on the leftside fingers on clipside) I can flick my wrist to deploy edge into a reverse grip. Which is great for gun retension along with 3o'clock escapes while attacking the groin, inner thigh, quad, ect. ect.
I hope this helps. With the Spyderco's I have owned to date, this technique is a no go.

You can not beat a delica and endura set. I like a plain blade delica and a fully-serrated endura. The plain blade delica will serve your everyday knife needs and the fully-serrated endura will get you out of any 'stickey situation' Take care.

I cant really comment on which to get since I only have an Endura, but as many have said, it depends on usage. If I had to pick only one, it would be Delica since it would fit my needs more closely. I dont have one since my Caly 3s, UKPKs, etc. fill that role. The Endura is my 'big' folder (no I dont have a Military yet). Having said all that, I really like the classic look of the Delica and am considering getting a G10 version to match my Endura - even if it doesnt have a choil.
