Re-envisioning the FRN Cricket: forum input

#1

Post by araneae »

So we all know that the Cricket is one of the classics of the Spydie lineup. The FRN version is mentioned very frequently as a sprint candidate. Sadly Sal seems to have reservations about the model returning in its original form. :(

So I thought I'd start a thread that listed the forum's thoughts on a new FRN Cricket 2. I'll start off with my wishlist. Anyone with photo shop or rendering skills feel free to make a "proto."
  • Bidirectional FRN, with the ridged spine ala Delica 4
  • A single liner on the lock side.
  • Screwed pivot construction.
  • Colors! Pink, Burgundy, Charcoal Grey
  • Wire clip tip up, reversible.
  • Spine jimping.
  • Black blade on one color option?
What's on your FRN Cricket wishlist?
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

Pretty much summed it up for me

Did he say that, or are you just assuming his lack of comment on the Pink Cricket thread means that?

Seems to me, a Sprint Run has a greater chance of being profitable for Spyderco if it uses existing tooling. Changing anything, beyond color and steel, increases cost and the risks of shooting for anything more ambitious than a Sprint on a model that was retired might cause Sal to have even greater reservations.

Original only has a single liner I believe it also has a screw pivot. At least I think I see a screw headi when I peek under the clip. Wire clip needs dual liners, or a metal backspacer, to work. That's going to increase the weight.

Left handed version, preferably clipless. But I don't see it happening.

My list:

-Lined FRN or G10 on one side, Titanium w/ frame lock on other side (a la Chokwe). I would settle for pure FRN or G10, though. Or pure TI, that would be sweet.
-Standard pocket clip (hate the wire clips)
-Colors would be nice, I don't mind pink and I think Orange would be nice on this knife.
-Almost any steel would be fine by me, AUS8 or VG10 or S30V, whatever.

I don't think Jimping is really necessary, plus the lack of jimping makes it easy to get into and out of the pocket. If it had jimping it should be the kind that is on the Manix 2 and the entire spine of the blade should be jimped.

I thought the reasoning behind keeping the steel RIL design is to keep rigidity to a max as prior models had a degree of flex Sal didn't like.

Whats the thinnest scale one can get/make in G10 and Micarta? Is Almite an option. IMHO the current cricket is pretty awesome but color offerings would be nice. Maybe machined slits like Dialex's Adventura? Cricketura? Lol.

I love it with the clip but I would buy one without a clip. Great knife to carry places where they are frowned upon. Shes a cutter!!!!!

Paul- He did say as much in a thread, stated that the design had a few issues relating to twist.

found the thread http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.p ... cket+twist

I was thinking Caly Jr type screw threads in the frn and Meerkat type clip.

It doesn't necessarily need a clip either as far as I'm concerned, especially with FRN where scratches from keys and things aren't a big deal.

I made one pretty thin and its holding up okay. http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41230

They did the Navigator with machined almite so it could be done. I'd prefer grippier non-metal scales though.

I did see that one. I loved it!

I would rather see thin scales on steel than a FRN version. I think for the shape of the handle your going to get better traction w/o structural flex and only a small increase in thickness.

Just my preference tho.

I use it as a money clip, but I also use a ZDP-189 Caly Jr. for the same purpose depending on what I am doing.

I use my only Cricket as a money clip.

Things I see to make it better are:

Titanium scales.
A back spacer to stop my cards from getting caught between the scales.

I'd like to see colors other than tan (or whatever the color they used on that tan/sand/dirt/ugly Native) or foliage green. How about dark blue, real green, purple or even red.

I can't stand wire clips, so I'll pass on that option. But everything else you listed works for me. Next to the Paramilitary, the Cricket is my very favorite Spyderco. I'll buy a few if the price wasn't needlessly inflated just because it's a sprint run (an FRN Cricket should have a street price of $35 to $50, no more).

Spyderco reserves red handles for their trainers.

Spyderco does not inflate prices on sprint runs. Regardless, I am looking for input on improvements for a new FRN Cricket 2 which could hopefully be a regular production model. :)

The only things on this list that would be new to the model:
  • Bidirectional FRN
  • Colors! Pink, Burgundy, Charcoal Grey
  • Wire clip tip up, reversible.

I only have to issues with the original version: Can't find anymore to buy, and I keep loosing the clip screws and can't replace them.

I love the FRN Cricket model! My mother and aunt both carry black FRN SE Crickets! My wife and I carry CF Crickets!
