Lost my Caly.. suggestions for a new EDC?

#1

Post by tomoto »

Hey there folks,

My pride and joy, my caly3 g10 had been my main EDC for several months now and I LOVED it to death. unfortunately, its recently grown legs and dissapeared!
:(

I'm not in the market for another edc knife. Iwas recently told that I will be given a cricket for Christmas from one of my coworkers :D , so I don't think I'll be needing a smaller EDC for a little while.

On the other hand (I'm left handed :p ) , I'm looking for an all around use knife... I'm open to other sizes and styles besides the 3'' mark, but I find that its fit the role extremely nicely thus far. I have small hands and something like a military would be lovely, but simply too much knife for me.

So I'm wondering what you guys would suggest for a knife that's easy to carry (light, preferably thin, not too heavy) and would not have its niche filled in by the cricket. I was thinking about obtaining another Caly, but I figured I'd have a go here before venturing off. The lock style... I'm still a bit reluctant toclose liner locks with my left hand, but fellow lefties, what say you guys for these right handed locks, or other ones, for that matter? How long did it take you to become accustomed to them? What knives would you suggest? :D

I think you should get a Stretch, it is a fantastic knife, and not badly priced.

I was going to say a stretch or a para. Both are fine knives. Sorry about your Caly.

While I'm a relative Spyderco newbie (especially on these forums), we seem to have a bit in common knife-wise...

I too am left-handed, have relatively small hands, and carry a PE Caly3 every day. Actually, I just bought myself another PE Caly3 as a backup... and one in SE... and one in CF ZDP-189. (3 new Caly3's, Merry Christmas to me!)

You might try a Delica - it's comparable in size and also has a back lock. I use one at work pretty often. I like it a lot, and it's good to have a knife that's not a pricey as the Caly3, but it does feel like a step down. I miss the Caly's wire clip, deep pocket carry, finger choil, and superior ergonomics (at least for my hand). I've never handled an Endura, but I suppose that's an option if you want to go a touch bigger.

I've never had a Spyderco with a liner lock, but I've had other liner lock knives. I never had a problem with it, and i found with a bit of practice I could close the knife with one hand (with either hand actually, since my weaker right hand had the advantage that the lock was designed for it). I tend to avoid liner lock knives these days, but that shouldn't stop you from giving it a try if you really want a liner locking model.

I have heard that compression locks are harder for lefties than liner locks, but I've never tried one. Hopefully someone else can comment on that - I'd really like to get a Para-Military, but the lock has stopped me so far.

To summarize: If you are anything like me, don't be surprised if you end up with another Caly3 :D

I guess everyone has their preference. I'm a lefty too and I have more problems with liner locks than compression locks. I am really trying to warm up to liner locks because I really want to get a Sage in CF.

Another nice option but perhaps too big would be one of the newly discontinued G10 Enduras. A certain seller on Ebay has one for 66.98. That's a steal for the quality that goes into that folder.

My opinion:

Most Practical: G10 caly3 in SE
Most Useful: SE Cricket
Most Clever: T-Mag
Most Cool: Phoenix
Most likely to stop a tank: Manix

Any one of them will likely cut anything.
Decision is practical vs. useful vs. clever vs. cool vs. tankstopping power :)

Stretch is most definitely worth consideration. Half an inch more blade, excellent slicer, and what I think are the best ergonomics of any Spyderco currently in production.

Ditto what "BW BW" said, try a Delica or just replace your trusty Caly.

if you haven't had a Delica yet, i'd defineitly recommend it...combo edge even!

I think that Military is one the best choices (after you remove the pocket clip) in pocket knives, even though Caly3 pleasantly surprised me (unlike Stretch).

Stretch if you want a lock. But why not consider my favorite, the BobT? It opens and closes easily with one hand and is completely ambidexterous.

If you were used to the Caly's form factor & style, why not get a CF Sage? Can be found for less than 90$ now. Amazing knife!

I believe you would find the UKPK Drop Point most appropriatte. Lightweight, high performance cutter, very versatile to use, ambidextrous lock (no lock), quality materials, great blade grind. Ergos are a touch better on the UKPK than on the Caly, because of the improved finger choil, and the drop point blade takes up less pocket real estate.

I would replaced it with G10 Caly3. I recently bought two of them lightly used very inexpensively. Just watch forums and e-bay and you will get one. IMHO, there is no knife better than Caly with 3" blade.
Good luck.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

I am not sure about your budget, but I find the Persistent to be a good edc knife. I have a Caly3 and a Delica that I rotate in and out of the rotation, but the price point of the Persistent makes it very affordable in the event that it would grow legs and walk off. The Persistent is easy to sharpen, hold the edge relatively well, and feels good in hand. You might want to take a look at it and if you are not happy with it, trade if off for something else.
