Ever get bored with Spyderco?

#1

Post by BBQ BOY »

I bought a Manix 2 not too long ago and I still haven't used it. I do carry a Benchmade, ParaMilitary and Strider SnG a lot. I find myself never having the desire to carry the Manix2. It is a beatiful knife. I really really like the knife but I have been discovering other knives that really intrigue me. I just bought a Hinderer XM-18 and not am really taken by Chris Reeves. Mainly the Sebenza and Ummnummann or however you spell it and the Fallkiniven PXL.
I guess I am going through a little change and probably will come back to my Spydies and get invested into them again. It just kind of seems to me that Spyderco's have become boring when compared to the rest. i mean most of them all look the same while the competition seems to be making gentleman folders that are tough as nails.
Please don't flame because I still am a Spyderco fan for life and really respect the knife and the company.Great value.

I got bored about 5 years ago...until they started using all this different and cool steel. The Military versions in S90V, D2, BG-42 and Japan models with ZDP-189, H1 and laminated blades made me take notice again. I think they are back on the cutting edge recently.
...oh you know why!

What gentlemens folders are you talking about, some of the stuff you mention is well above the price range of anything spyderco offers? Its kind of apples and oranges, I see your point in some aspects, there are many Spydies that dont appeal to me at all but there are many that I really love!

It's funny how an abundance of choice inspires apathy, but for every winner, there is a stable of 'losers'. When there is a necessary restriction--like GoMeR brings up with money, or needed properties of the item like demtek9 mentions with different steels--then the value of an item changes, but without any restrictions, choice is arbitrary, and the result is left to preference or whim. Over time those restrictions change, preferences change, whims change, and then the winner changes. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, not that what I think is going to change that fact of life :)

I get interested in Spyderco on and off. I was a little bored, and then I visited the SFO in Golden, and all of a sudden I'm a total fanatic again. That's not to say there's any other knife company I'm really interested in... besides Chris Reeve and custom makers that is.

Spydercos are the best functioning knives there are, but I get 'bored' in the sense that I seek some variety too.

I can't really say that I get bored but I can say that I do sometimes get frustrated. I have now reached a point in my collecting where there are only a handful of Spydies that I really want and they are discontinued so I don't think I will ever get them. That's frustrating to me.

Not yet, been at this over a year and still have many interesting models that I haven't tried yet. Not sure I'll ever catch up.

Not really bored, it's just that lately I've been more interested in traditional slipjoint styles.

I think Spyderco makes some of the more unique knives on the market, and just keeps innovating.

Yeah I get bored with Spydies every now and then but, I always come back around. I've been carrying my Para for the last couple of weeks and can't wait till the Para2 comes out (hint for Sal).

With that being said, when I'm not carrying my Para it's usually my Lg Classic Sebbie or both at the same time :D and I'm asking for a Strider for Christmas.

P.S.
RELEASE THE PARA 2 ALREADY :) :)

My only problem with Spyderco is that I can't afford every model I want.

Spyderco is my flag ship production line. After that I turn to customs, and as we all know there are many nice things to choose from.

The other thing I can say is Spyderco is the single best value in knives, as there are a few that reach custom levels.

My customs for the most part are Emerson, Eelishewitz, Pat Crawford, Randall, Strider and Chris Reeve. Reeve's to me are considered customs, but that is just me.

There are a few others mixed in there, and a few older production benchmades.

I have countless SAK's and multi-tools, oh and I have a Glock Knife in the company truck. Good value the Glock knife.

It's still one of my fave production brands.
Now, I don't feel the urge to own all models. For example the recent and recently announced ones like Chicago, Meerkat, etched dragonfly etc don't thrill me that much.

The two that I am looking forward to most are the C22 Walker reissue (will it feature those lovely blue screws again?) and whatever Ed Schempp is cooking up for his ethnic series. I once read it would be inspired by the classic Corsican or Navaja knife design, which is interesting as I have traditional originals of these patterns. I already made video reviews on these, and it would be fun to compare them once the Schempp is available.

Don't have time to get bored - it's one jones after another with me. I can feel the old flames of my vintage Puma bug being fanned at the moment. I'd love a 1972 Duke :)
