Para-military advantages over the Delica 4?

#1

Post by byoo79 »

Knowledge is power. The more and more I read reviews, view youtube videos and pics, the more I LOVE spyderco.

I EDC a Delica 4. Love this knife. Durable, reliable and just a great overall VG-10 blade for everyday use.

The spyderco para-military. It seems to be a well-loved knife and very popular among spyderco afficianados. Flat-ground blade, G-10, great size... whats not to love right?

But what is it about the Para-military that justifies the cost over, say a delica 4? Is it JUST the G-10 handle? Better blade? Is S30v even CONSIDERED better? Does the compression lock add to the cost?

In reality, I want one... but the logical side of my brain ALWAYS has to justify it. Thanks in advance!

A full sized handle, better ergonomics. A larger blade, thicker stock and stronger, but FFG for that amazing cutting power. Finger choil for additional control. Probably the best lock available. And yes, I too believe that S30V is superior to VG10.

Let's say... a Renault Clio, affordable, versatile, practical. Versus a BMW 3 series, a performer that will never let you down.

Besides, the Para is a real beauty!

Nothing but a bloated handle, overly thick blade, handed lock, and limited carry options.

If you have been happy with the D4 and are looking for something a little different but not as drastic a change, how about the D4 in G-10 which comes with the full flat grind (FFG) anyway. Or if you want to try a FFG, you could send your D4 off to Tom Krein to have him regrind it for you. That would be a less expensive way to go if you ask me. :)

Honestly besides the blade steel I like the Delica better, the multi-carry options and smaller size make it better for me.

I like both the Delica and the Para. As a general use knife, the Delica is a great choice (as you know). The Para is quite a bit bigger/bulkier. Sal said in another thread that the G-10 Dragonfly was a lot more work/time to assemble compared to the FRN version, and that may hold true here to an extent also (along with different lock) and account for some of the price difference.

S30V and VG-10 are both great steels. I like them both a lot. The compression lock is a very cool and strong lock, but my favorite lock is the mid-lock (as found on Delica). Both the Delica and the Para are good knives and will get the job done, just differently. The Para would be a good contrast to the Delica (G-10, S30V, Made in Golden, comp lock, finger-choil, etc) so if you want to try something different (and a little bigger) go for it!

The D4 is a perfect edc knife. But...
I also have two para's and they are amazing work horses. I love the steel, the ffg and the handle. They are two of my favorite spyders, I just wish they rode lower in the pocket. great knife, get one! :D ...or two

Keep your Delica and get a Military. The Para is certainly a great knife, but I sold both of mine. For me, the Para is just one of those knives that was a bit redundant for me. If I want to carry something big, I can choose my Superhawk, a Millie or Endura, FRN Stretch or even a C83 Perisan or Kris. If I want to go smaller, I have plenty of choices between my Delicas, mini Persian, Khukri, Native, etc. My Paras were just too much in the middle without really offering anything over and above any of my other EDC choices so they ended up just sitting in the drawer. YMMV. :)
I prefer to ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
