Delica opening/closing problem

#1

Post by hoshyoto »

I purchased my first Spyderco knife, a Centofante 3, about six months ago. Since then I've bought a Delica ZDP-189 SE and a Salt I PE. I've had the Delica for about three months and it doesn't open nearly as smoothly as the Centofante or the Salt I that I got about a month ago. I've tried lubing it, adjusting the pivot screw, and even adjusting the various screws holding the FRN scales together. While the blade opens easier, it still is never as smooth as my other knives. In addition, there always seems to be a feel and sound of grinding as it opens and closes that I have not experienced with either of my other two knives. Is this normal for ZDP-189 knives, or perhaps for the ZDP--189 version of the Delica, or is it something that I should consider contacting Spyderco about?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

try loosening the pivot w/o removing it. run under water and blow it out. might be a small peice of grit in there. tighten it back up and see how she is. i def. suggest loosening the pivot alot but NOT removing while your getting the grit out. works well for me.

Depends on how much less smoothly it opens, and what you mean when you say "less smooth". Although they all use the same type of lock, the geometry is a bit different from model to model. I don't have a Centofante 3, but I would say that all my Delica IVs take a bit more effort to open that my Salt I. They don't feel gritty, or rough, but they just feel like they have stiffer springs.

Was there any scoring on the pivot contact points?

First, thanks to chuck buck for his advice. I've rinsed the knife out twice. Each time it opened smoothly after drying, but within a day it started getting rougher. Also, after rinsing the locking part of the blade that is behind the notch would be gleaming, but as it got rougher to open some black discoloration began to appear. I noticed this happening both times after I rinsed it.

Any further ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff
