Something like the Tasman Salt in VG-10 or S30V?

Hi guys,

I just got another one - the Tasman Salt black FRN PE. I actually got it to keep in the shower... I know I know, I am a bit nutty. Anyway, when I got the knife I was so impressed with it that I started looking for something else like it without H1 steel. This is my first H1 blade so I'm not too experienced with how well it retains an edge or how well it works - but I was wondering if there was something with similar dimensions with a plain edge hawkbill with FRN/G10 and VG-10 or S30V. I looked a bit at the Pkal and it seemed okay - does anyone else have any suggestions?

Thanks

There are Harpies in carbon fiber and G10 out there. Check knife-bst and bladeforums. I have only seen a few Merlins which is the FRN version of the Harpy.
But the best plain edge hawkbill made right now by Spyderco is the Superhawk. If you have the funds its the top of the line plain edge hawk. Carbon fider, Full flat grind, and 50/50 finger choil.

This is a little different but is the first one to come to mind. The Carbon Fiber Super Hawk might fit the ticket. It uses VG-10 steel and is a nice upscale knife.

The closest would probably be the FRN C08 Merlin in ATS-55. There are some VG-10 Merlins, but AFAIK, they're all SE. Aside from the steel and hardware, the Merlin was identical to the Tasman.

Next closest would be a tossup between the PE CF VG-10 Harpy and the PE SS VG-10 "Japanese Market" Harpy. Blades are a bit thicker, 3mm vs 2.5mm for the Tasman and Merlin, and the curve of the hawkbill is slightly different, but they're quite close.

Beyond those, you're getting into different locks, different sizes, and totally different shapes. The advantage of the P'kal and Superhawk would be the ease of finding them compared with the others, which are all sought after collectibles.
