Carry It or Not Carry It?

#1

Post by smikesmith3 »

I got 2 forum knives, one that I'm giving away on our site which leaves me with 1 knife. The question is do I carry it or not? It has been sitting in the box since I got it and I've pulled it out to show a few people. It's just so pretty I don't want to mess it up but it's also so pretty that I want to show it off and use the thing cause that is what it is made for.

Obviously you can tell I'm torn.

Anyone in the same boat?

I'd say keep it as a collector piece. I'm sure you have plenty of other Spydies that will fill your EDC needs nicely.

Carry and use it. I carry all of mine, custom, production, one of a kind. All get carried and used.

I do maintain all the knives in my collection. I keep them clean, and all are protected from rust with Tuf-Glide, and Tuf-Cloth.

Unless you know you will have it in a hard use situation, carry it, and I bet like me, you will have a back-up knife with you anyway.

lol so it looks like it's 50/50 so far. I like your answer Toad. I do carry a backup, so I guess this could be the backup one.

I think this Forum knife will be my first display-only one. It's about the same size of my Caly3 SE, but the Caly3 fits my hand better and has serrations, which I prefer for EDC use. I also have the USN Endura, but I carry that one regularly because it fits my hand well and has serrations. (The D2 Para is my only PE EDC knife.)

I am in the same boat as you, but I don't want to let it die in the box. I am a user more than a collector. I just need to put in my pocket and get over it. It was made to be used.

To use or not to use would depend if the knife in question were to be of great value to a collector in the near or distant future.

I always say carry. I love re-reading this quote from Sal if I ever think of not using a knife.

--------------------------------------------
"We've built a few collector pieces but most Spydercos are hungry and like to eat. As mentioned, open, close, cut, clean, oil, cut, cut, cut... To a Spyderco, that is living. All of the effort that we put into designing and building the knife is found in using the knife; The horsepower in the steel, the edge, the ergos, sophisticated mechanisms, carefully chosen materials or custom made materials, history of and refinements to the design, etc. Letting it die in the box is to lose 75% of what we put into it."

Ive been faced with this connundrum in the past, and must say that I am happy my Semi-Rare Millie is seeing 99% of my pocket time. Love it more and more everyday. Plus the forum knife is gonna make alot of people ask about it when they see the markings and whatnot. Its a good convert-starter IMHO.

Only reason I stop carrying a knife is if there is sentimental value. The respective knives I had in my pocket when my boys were born will go to them when they are older. The Jimmy Lile knife I bought from Mrs. Lile I put in the safe when they closed shop. Also have my 1 pretty knife/Sgian Dubh that Mike Mooney made using blued Spirograph Damascus & an Ebony handle with nickel silver fittings.

Rest of my stuff is fair game to use. Of course most knife nuts could probably carry a different knife daily for a whole month. With that kind of rotation most of them won't get worn out any time soon. But then that is our addiction. :D

Carry it. :spyder:

I can't argue with that...I'll start putting it in rotation as the backup knife! Tomorrow I'll go dual Natives.

there's always the option of using it carefully. using it, but not using it for certain tasks. or using it only on special occasions. if you decide to sell it later down the line, and have only used it lightly, the value really will not have decreased by very much.
