Blue FRN/ZDP-189 Stretch

Post by catamount »

Another super sweet :spyder: EDC :D

Image

Great color! It's darker than the D4 ZDP sprint, with no purple. I'd call it "blue jeans blue".

The ZDP blade has a nice thin edge and is super sharp.

That is a thing of beauty! Once my wallet recovers from the Spyderhawk and Manix 2 CF I will surely get one.

WOW that blue looks great!!!! I have been considering a stretch for a little while now, and the combination of that blue and the ZDP-189 FFG Blade it's probably going to push me over the edge :)
Congrats!

I love this knife! It's great in the hand. I really appreciate all of the new colored frn and flat grinds lately.

Dang Tom, that's pretty. :D Do think an bead blasted clip would set it off better than the black.

I've already traded the black clip for a silver one, and put it on the correct side ;)

The color is perfect for being discreet in the pocket of a pair of jeans. If it had a wire clip instead of the black clip it would be nearly invisible.

I got my CF stretch in Saturday and the first thing i did was put a silver clip on it without the lanyard hole in it . Seeing all these FRN stretches just makes me want one but i already EDC the CF stretch.

I don't have a blue stretch, but I thought I would blast my black stretch clip. I also did my D4 clip. Sorry about the poor quality pics.

I always wonder if the ZDP, like on the thin bladed stretch, is more prone to breaking than VG10. I am sure it is not a big problem.
Usually the harder the steel the more brittle the steel? Maybe I am totally wrong.
I love the Blue FRN though.

I thought that alternating my Bob T with a Sage 2 would keep me satisfied for quite a while. But you guys are making me think more and more about a new Stretch. I have the SS/kraton one and it's a bit heavy and toothy.

Very nice, Tom! That looks like the color of the E4W. Is it close?

That's a worry only if you use it in a way that knives are not meant to be used.

In theory, you're at least partially correct. There may be steels that are both very hard, and very tough, but I don't think ZDP-189 is one of them.

On a more practial level, I've been using my ZDP Stretch since they first came out. I don't do anything really foolish with it, or with any of my other knives, but it has done everything I've asked of it, including cutting up yellow turnip for stew. In case you've never done that, they're quite dense fairly and quite hard, but somewhat inconsistently so, and can put considerably side and twisting loads on a blade. Have also used it, out on the trail, to cut through wild grape vine which I consider to be nature's answer to steel cable.

Search does not seem to be working right now, but I vaguely recall there having been reports of a couple Mule blades breaking, can't recall if they were ZDP or whatever came right before it.

I remember reading about the couple of isolated incedents where the ZDP Mules shattered as well, but haven't heard anything since the initial report or two. Since more people would have surely chimed in had they experienced the same problem, this leads me to believe that shattering ZDP is an exception to the norm and not a widespread issue. When I get my ZDP Stretch, I plan on using it like I do my other knives and using screwdrivers and prybars for screwing and prying (hmmm...something about that last phrase sounds kinda strange ;) ).

Gave this a twirl in a shop the other day - very convincing. Not sure about how I'll choose between the VG10 and ZDP model - 2 ZDPs will probably feel greedy ..... and not sure either what its Sunday best scales will be made of - perfect :)
