What do you collect?

#1

Post by Ookami »

I would be interested to know what :spyder: s you are looking for to add to your collection.

As for myself, I mostly collect the large, higher end Models with G10 or micarta handles. Eg G10 Police, Manix, Gunting, Shabaria, Military ... you get the idea. I had doubles, but I tend to keep only one of each now.
I am also letting my remaining FRN models go except for the one Endura-Hawk (possible collector value) I have. The only steel handled models in my collection are a Police and a Worker. Currently I am eyeing the Chokwe.

So let's hear about your prey pattern, then.
Do you collect
- any :spyder :( ey, Peter?)
- only a specific model in every configuration (Qs, Natives, whatever)
- whatever strikes your fancy
- only Santa Fe customized versions
- only in house designed models (or only Sal's models, or Eric's ...)
- only collaborations
- specific materials (steel, handle material)
- only sprint runs

... there are bound to be more patterns out there, so don't be iffy if you feel underrepresented by the above list, instead, let us know what you collect. Don't be shy. :D

PS: I don't know if this has been talked about, as my search didn't bring anything up. If it has, please refer me to the according thread.

I guess I'd fall under the category 'anything that strikes my fancy'. I have a complex set of likes/dislikes. Usually I go for practical and useable, but when something's pretty enough I could fall for that too. I gravitate towards three and 2,5 inch blades, leaf shape and full flat grind, colored handles are a plus. But I will go for a bigger knife or fixed blade if it's nice enough.

I second the "whatever strikes my fancy". I've got a few users, but for collecting/non-use I only have the USN Endura, Kumo, and plan on adding a forum knife here pretty soon. Mostly I figure that if I'm going to buy it, I might as well use it.

Although I missed out on the first two Mules, I have picked up the most recent two and plan on getting all the future releases. So I suppose I am going to collect those, not for future resale or displaying in mint condition on my wall or anything, but because I enjoy building the handles and by collecting them, it gives me an excuse to buy a new knife three or four times a year.

I like to have at least one type of each of the Endura's(PE,PS,SE) for a safe queen. I also like to collect the Stretch model, just one of each variation will do so it would be 1 CF, 1 Black FRN, 1 Blue FRN(soon), 1 SS/Kraton, and any other Stretch model that comes out. I dont know if this counts but, I have one C83 Persian as a safe queen.

I am new to the collecting of Spydies yet my collection seems to grow as "whatever strikes my fancy" I prefer to have my finger in a bit of everything and just get what I like :D Maybe in a few years I will narrow it down. One goal I have been thinking about though was to collect all the Orange knives. I guess we will see :D

Id say whatever strikes my fancy. I also like most of the collaborations. I especially like Ed Schempp's Spydies. Of the models I really like I will get all the variations/blade steels/handle materials/colors. I really think the benchmark for all Spyderco's are the Endura/Delica. They are my EDC more often than not. Ive also taken a fancy to the Millie and Stretch.

whatever strikes my imagination.
Life is too short to buy knives, which I do not like. My favorites became my EDC. It is absolute pleasure to cut branches and brake down boxes with C83 Persian, cut my lunch with Caly3, open letters and coffee packages with Kopa Cocobolo.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian

Aside from trying to stick to mostly PE midlocks, mine is pretty unfocused at the moment. It's also gotten a bit out of hand. One of these days, I will buckle down and start selling off a whole bunch of knives. I will keep my users and the multiple backups I have of those, focus my collection on a few models and groupings that I particularly like, Q's, Kopas, miniatures, and Forum Knives come to mind, plus knives which have sentimental attachments, and let it go at that.

Started out unusual - Almite Cricket,
then went money clip - Spin,
then small - Dflies,
then large - Endura G10,
then dressy - Kopa Pearl/Abalone
then CF/CPM S30V - Sage,
then Golden/Slippie/Orange -UKPK,
then SE - Caly 3 SE
then niche - Remote Release

As you can see, each one fits a certain 'need' that I make up to rationalize buying. I will probably never buy more than one of each (unless it breaks). Im a marketing guy, I like to figure out different needs and then fill it...

Next up is...one of the following:
Leafstorm - cool, unusual, collaboration
Rookie - mid-size carry
G10 Dfly - love G10 (so, OK I will have more than one FRN and SS)
Something H1 - Atlantic?
Cat/Boston - small, CF carry
Something ball lock - Manix 2?

Dont know which to get next...

Ahh, I saw the title and thought it was gonna be "what else do you collect?"

In my case I don't technically collect anything but have acquired excessive amounts of:
Boomerangs, Bicycles and bike gear, knifes, multi-tools, flashlights, tents, sleeping bags, & technical jackets.

Knifewise I prefer blades under 3.5" - True pocket knifes, no particular brand

When I got into collecting knives back in June, as opposed to just having one or two users hanging around, I was a bit overwhelmed by all the choices. Manufacturers, handles, steel, locks, there seemed to be too many paths to follow.

So to narrow things down, I eventually decided to initially focus on collecting as many different types of steel as possible. Since then, I've covered S30V, ZDP, H1, 154CM, VG10, D2, Case CV and 13C26.

I thought that focusing on steel types would limit the number of blades to get, at least in the short run, but I've already repeated a few (ZDP, VG10 and CV) just because I became a big Spydie fan along the way and I've always liked and carried Case slippies. Next up will probably be a Tenacious/Persistence, a fixed blade in 1095, and a folder in M4.

It's been very interesting to observe and compare the ways the different types sharpen and hold up over time. Once I get a critical mass of commonly available steels, I suppose I'll have to come up with another system.

I was going down the whatever took my fancy route but it was getting out of hand. Recently I took the decision to concentrate on slippits and Spydercos with a hunting lean (Ocelot, Impala, Wegner and, dare I say it, the Stretch).
I still have one or two users kicking about and a few surplus knives that will be traded/sold for something that fits at some point in the future.

Interesting answers so far, but let's not go into the "what do you collect besides :spyder: 's" direction.

I'm in the same boat as most of you with "whatever strikes my fancy", but since I tend to have an expensive taste :D and Spydies in Germany are darned expensive (for example: an ordinary Endura4 is starting close to $120 from the cheapest dealer :eek :) , I am adding Spydies to my collection when I see some kind of bargain. So, my Spydie hunt isn't only one for some "holy grails", but evenly so for affordable prices. Of course and in the first place, the knife has to appeal to me, too ;)

That way, according to my Excel sheet, I got my knives for roughly half the price they would have cost when buying them here (if available at all, I own some MULEs and Forum knives, too.) The hunt for these knives is part of the fun, as most of you know. Just that the hunt over here is more difficult :)

Dennis

P.S.: Lately, I find myself looking for colors... it seems my subconscious wants to get all colors ever produced by Spyderco. For example, I don't see any other reason for that PINK Delica in my collection :D Well, there's a long way to go. I don't even have a yellow SALT yet.

Folders, and Bali-songs. Mostly :spyder: Benchmade, cold steel, Boker automatics, case, Bradley bali's. and other
I'd rather be tried by 12, than carried by 6.

I've bought whatever interested me. I've purchased dozens of models and sold the ones that I didn't like as much, didn't fit my large hands or I didn't think I'd use.

The only model I can say for sure that I'm collecting are the Sages; they're among my favorites and they're easy because I haven't missed any.
