Small blades

#1

Post by Jamie »

I was just wondering what everyone thought of a couple of smaller knives, the lava and the urban wharncliffe in particular.

It seems like there are a lot of lava fans. It looks like a great design but I usually find myself wanting more blade, if it wasn't being discontinued I probably wouldn't be thinking about getting one.

I haven't seen much about the urban so I was just curious to hear what people thought of it.

I have been spending some time in cities so I thought I might get something smaller
the cricket looks good too

I just got the ladybug, and I can't even tell you how happy I am with it. For such a small knife you would be surprised at what it is capable of doing in terms of EDC.

I have an Urban coming this week but i got the foliage green..The upcoming G-10 Dragonfly looks sweet! I have several ladybugs but if you want the ladybug checkout the G-10 Finch! Sometimes for $5 on ebay!

For me, the Lava doesnt do anything, but I have to admit that now that it's discont, I'm thinking about getting one. I like the size of the Urban, but want a lock on it. I have the UKPK - love it, but just feel better with a lock. Urbans are great size, though. You might want to wait for the upcoming Cat - which is 2.5 inch blade (I think), CF scales and liner lock. Perfect for my EDC. Or you might want the G10 Dragonfly. OK, those last two were not what you were asking about...

Boker Subcom's,but the ultimate would be a G10 Dragonfly with the same transparent lime green G10 like the leafstorm.

I just LOVE my little big knives. They are such show stoppers.

Here in NYC I like to have small knife on me yet capable of anything(spyderco)
Love the urban, caly 3, and even the dragonfly .Lately the rookie just will not get out of my pocket.

Its summer here and I hate being weighed down by bulky things. Spyderco's line up of "little big" knives really do the job and there is something for everyone.

I've fallen in love with my Urban Wharncliffe.

It's SO comfy in hand for it's size. The blade is so great. It's like a big awesome x-acto knife. I'm in design, so it is very useful for cutting matte board, sharpening pencils, cutting masking material, etc.

The G-10 is nicely grippy too.

GET ONE!

PS (I've got many LBK's and the Urban is my fav next to Cricket)

The Lava is an excellent little knife. So are some of Spydercos other small folders like the Kiwi, Kopa, and Dragonfly. The Urban lacks a lock which is a feature I would not voluntarily give up and is expensive, considering its unlined G-10 handles and relatively simply mechanism.

I've been carrying a stainless dragonfly for 8 years now, and it's on me 90% of the time. The spur replaces it for neck carry once in a while.

Even with my big hands and prefering 4" knives, I have a lot of smaller ones in the 2-3" range. Bone kiwi, ss 'fly, spur, caly jr (zdp), lava, subcom, cricket, lil temp (leaf), dyad jr (micarta)... probably missed a few off the top of my head.

I like the way the Lava fits my hand and I will probably start carrying mine since I managed to drop it at work. I had taken it in the box to show a few guys and the tray slid out. It had the bubble wrap on it, but it still dinged the end of the handle. :o Oh, well...now I can carry it :)

got a Lava yesterday, so I can't say much about it, nice little knife, great ergos. :D

I love my Urban wharnie, the D'fly, the Ladybugs and my Boker subcoms.
I call them little big knives, since their performance exceeds their size.

Lava

In my opinion, the Lava wins, easily, if you need a smaller bladed knife with the kind of ergonomics that will allow you to hang onto the knife even in stressful situations:

The Urban Wharnie is just an awesome little guy - very useful blade shape, looks great/cute/NKP friendly, very light and strong, and makes one fine whittler. It feels great in the hand... you know you want one! :D

- best wishes, Jazz.

Hi,

In the UK small is definitely beautiful for EDC :)

Even the Ladybug is a no-no because of the lock !

I EDC an orange UKPK and couldn't wish for a better knife; a real classic !

best regards

I love Lava and I would love it even more, if handle would be wood, micarta, bone or at least G10. My favorite little knife is Kopa (right now in my watch pocket). I never considered to buy Urban, just for few more bucks I can have an extra Kopa, which is far more superior in my book, due to the lock, look and better materials.

My top choices Natives5, Calys, C83 Persian
