H-1 edge retention

#1

Post by Lev »

I've never tried H-1 and was just curious as to any thoughts about edge retention. I've always been happy with VG-10 and was wondering if there is a small or large difference in edge retention between the two?

Similar to AUS8 for me in PE, maybe a bit better. Not quite as good as VG-10. SE is a different story though.

I have a D'fly in VG-10 and a Pacific Salt in H-1. Both are SE. Edge retention seems to be very comparable on both.

Thanks. I think I'll start with an H-1 Ladybug and feel it out.

I love my Pacific Salt H1 plain edge. However, the next one I buy will be serrated. The VG-10 holds an edge better than the H1 by far in a plain edge.
Use your blades in the kitchen, it's great bonding time!

I agree, I have to sharpen my Pacific Salt more often than my caly 3, then again, I use it more....so I'm not really sure. It holds an edge just fine for my needs

I have the ladybug H-1 and sharpened it 4 times already..It is so easy to sharpen with a bling edge! I don't really notice a diff between my other steels as far as retention because i touch them up often.

I have heard it said that after the H1 blade becomes work hardened it`s similar in edge holding to VG-10.

Wow, I haven't been around here in a long time.

Anyway, this thread is dead on it for me. I happen to be at the beach with my family this week and I brought a folder in H1 with me. I've had it a couple years and it's not really been carried at all. This week, however, it has spent hours in the ocean and it looks like new.

I can't speak to the edge holding on mine since I've not really carried it until this week. But as I was on the beach today I had thoughts of the Caspian FB. Tending to think about the blunt edge.

Back to the point, it seems like I read a couple years ago that H1 - at least initially - had edge retention similar to AUS - 6.

A bit of a tough call for me - I have an Atlantic Salt in SE and I use it waaayyyy more in hard use than most of my hard use PE blades. Compared to when I got it though, the edge definitely seems to holder longer. I'm doing some reno work this weekend, installing a new shower stall, so we'll see :)
