Strange eBay auctions for Civilians

#1

Post by PSU »

I came across about a dozen auctions for Civilians that are listed for a buy-it-now of $95 with free shipping. That's about 1/3 of the MSRP. Something is very fishy. Beware, I was burned in a similar situation by a seller that listed a dozen identical hand held GPSs a very low price. Needless to say, it was a scam, the seller ended up selling a bunch of them within 24 hours and then they closed their PayPal account before anyone wised up to the situation.

The auction may be legit but you know what they say, if it's too good to be true...

Only 8 feedbacks - that is scary for the buyer.

I do not understand, usually PayPal puts a hold on the money for a few weeks when the seller has little or no feedback... So they cannot just close the account and run.

I so wanna pull the trigger & get one of those... but:

90% feedback

Not very reassuring. I suppose I could just throw in a bid for the minimum $25 and see what happens, and if it's a scam, then I'm only out 25 bucks.

edit: just checked and they only have one negative feedback. That explains the 90%.

Something is very odd indeed. And we may never know how this all turns out. I can tell you if I knew they were real I'd buy up at least five or so right now. Has anyone sent a question to the seller? See what type of BS they feed or don't feed. :D

$49.99 for a brand new Civilian with pouch?!? That sounds like the deal of the decade but I want to call shenanigans.

Maybe they're "hot" and they quickly want to unload them? I've heard stories where sometimes a box of goods sometimes "falls off the truck" so to speak...

Thinking about pulling the trigger, but don't want to get burned. I've been wanting a Civi for a while.

I sent a message to the seller, we will see. I also noticed the free shipping, seems almost too good to be true.

More than likely they do not exist at all and thats a stock photo from somewhere else, being I try to be honest I still think everything must be real. :D If they are real I will be sorry I did not get one! When someone is hurting for money I would think they would try and get every cent they could from remaining treasured posessions.

Look at their other items for sale. I bet these are hot. The old "I have a friend..." line

"These are brand new unlockable Motorola Razr Cell phones from T-Mobile. I have a friend who works with distribution for T-Mobile who got me a lot of these phones to sell because my husband and myself were recently laid off work and we really need the extra cash to try and save our home. I am seling these phones with no reserve and a buy it now fee of $39.99. It is impossible to get these phones this cheap anywhere else. They are not refurbished!!! They are new in the box with all accessories. Thank you for looking and happy bidding."

Good point, if they know they are worth $200 why not ask $150? Why target the Spyderco community for a scam, do we look scamable?

They are also selling toothbrushes, they also have a "friend" who works there.

"Factory sealed Brand new Oral-B Triumph 9400, From what I am told the king of Pulsonic tooth brushes. I have a friend who works at an undisclosed store who got me a few of these at a very low price. I use one myself and i can honestly say after using this thing your teeth have never felt cleaner, it is just amazing. They retail for about $135 but after my husband and i have been laid off work we are auctioning them with no reserve, and a buy it now price of $79.99 with free shipping. I have over a dozen of these items so if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Unfortunatly unless the toothbrush does not work I cannot accept returns if it is oppened, I am sure you can understand. Thank you for looking and happy bidding."
