Total lack of work ethic.
Total lack of work ethic.
What is with people? The economy is in a down turn, and yet the guys that work under me just don't seem to care if they have a job or not. They come into work late, lay out,say I gotta go at the drop of a hat, don't clean up after themselves, have no want to,and generally want to cry about everything.I have people apply for a job at my workplace every day nearly. The people that come in and put in a application don't really look like they want a job either.I hear nothing but crying from people that they lost their job and give me a big huge sob story.I truly feel bad for the people that were doing their jobs and were glad to have them, but I don't for the lazy ones.It makes me wonder sometimes if our economy and country is in the shape were in due to being lazy, and having no work ethic.I believe that is why a lot of companies are manufacturing products overseas and other countries due to the fact that people won't work unless they are making insane amounts of money.Even when they are making great money and asked themselves to be truthfull they wouldn't be worth the money they were getting paid.Sorry for the huge rant, but I am tired of busting my butt ,and having to do my job and most everyone elses job that works under me. Remember work harder Millions on Welfare Depend on you.

This is why I don't mind the courier company. The ones that don't work don't get paid. When some drivers pull in 3x what others do it's pretty clear who's working.
Meanwhile, the lines here play charades and hangman to pass the time. I'd bet that maybe 20% of the company (ie anyone not in production) actually works on a given day.

Why do people worry more if you argue with your voices than if you just talk with them? What about if you lose those arguements?
Slowly going crazy at work... they found a way to make the voices work too.

It shocks me too, and makes me glad that I grew up in a family where a dedication to hard work was a given.
I've had to fire about a dozen people in my working life, and no matter how many warnings each received, he/she was always surprised. Whether it's apathy, laziness, depression, whatever - it's a shame to see people wasting their lives.

About the same with the printing factory I worked last. There were many people that didn't want to work at other departments because it "was not in their jobdescription"
They should be lucky to have a steady job.
They had to end my temporary contract from upperhand because the company had to cut their expenses big time.
And those steady "it's not in my jobdesriptions" guys are still working there.

You bring forth an interesting and valid point. I work in the manufacturing industry and have done so for the past seventeen years. Through attrition, co-workers have left, some retired, some promoted, some died. They were eventually replaced with new hires and these new hires, especially the ones in the past 5-8 years or so behave exactly as you describe. They call in sick all the time, show up tardy, take excessive time off for "baby leave", rarely if ever will they lift a finger to "go the extra mile", and they leave the control house an absolute pig sty. They are constantly checking their cell phone every 10 minutes or so for text messages and/or missed calls. And the worst thing about all of this is that the union will protect and defend these types of employees. These actions place a burden on the rest of the workforce and these employees are protected when they should be fired. I agree with you that productivity has gone down the tubes.v8r wrote:What is with people? The economy is in a down turn, and yet the guys that work under me just don't seem to care if they have a job or not. They come into work late, lay out,say I gotta go at the drop of a hat, don't clean up after themselves, have no want to,and generally want to cry about everything.

I aggree with it all except for working for less wages. People need to make a lot of money now because everything is so expensive. I can't work for $15/hr anymore and support my family, just won't happen. An stuff creeps up on you. Like my van giving out on me recently, I planned to drive it for 10 more years. Ironically it was cheaper to finance a brand new car then a used one. I wanted an older truck, but the bank wouldn't finance it because it was older then 2003, so I bought a brand new car in order to get cheap payments so I can survive. As for work, I work my *** off and so do my co-workers, we don't even have time to take lunch or coffee breaks all day, I mean you could, but you would have to work another hour every day to finish all the work. Guys that don't work are let go, simple as that. I've never had someone question my work ethic, I can work most people under the table, not a problem.

I can sympathize. We have been having a lot of turnover lately because of new hires calling in, being late, etc. Luckily we have been hiring everyone as seasonal/temporary for the spring and summer season. That means we can let them go for any reason. I play the role of the "mean manager" at work, so I usually get to break the news to the deadbeats and tell them to pound sand. Several have been surprised, even though they did nothing but cause trouble. One kid no call/no showed us for 2 days, then just showed up to work. He said that he didn't have a phone so he couldn't call in.
On the other hand, just this week I interceded for two kids that I thought deserved another chance. Maybe I'm really a softy at heart :o

I'm 35 and we have some 26 year old guys at work doing the same BS. They act like the world owes them a living. All you hear over the cube walls is complaining and talking about non work related stuff. It's like they don't realize that the boss can hear them. It gets so out of hand that we've had to tell them to shut up from time to time when we are on the phone or just even trying to do work. It's only a matter of time before the Bossman shoots them right out the door. Hopefully then they will learn.

It's pretty common everywhere...........unfortunately!
One of the problems is that Kids are fed unachievable goals by Careers Teachers and some of their peers. TV doesn't help any here either. NOT everybody, in fact a tiny percentage, ever achieve true wealth through their work no matter how hard they try, most of us are glad to look after our Kids, our Family's and whoever else we can fit in BUT the perception of many is that they are OWED a living NOT the fact they have to EARN a living.
I get comparatively well paid BUT I also put up with crap like not having a holiday for 2-3 years and being soooooo burnt out by the end of that I end up taking 3 months break and manage to do absolutely nothing!
My soul and mind screamed for rest.
BUT when I explain that scenario to younger people a lot of them say "I wouldn't put up with that.........." its not a case of putting up with anything its a case of having to get a job done, in my case three different jobs/projects completed, no choice in the matter, a lot of people were waiting anxiously for things to be finished so they could start on their work in turn.
Are all younger people like this? Of course not! There are plenty of older people just as bad if not worse.

I noticed you're all talking about people working "under" you, and how you "couldn't survive on $15 hr"... I'm 30 and make 8 bucks an hour working for some rich Eastern Indian's at their hotel. Am I supposed to give a sh!t about my job, country, or YOU? I don't think so. Hopefully, we'll all be taught a good lesson soon. :o )

my employees don't work "under" me. they work for me. i give them the benefit of the doubt and the training required to SUCCEED. what happens next is up to them.
i can easily survive on $15 or less an hour. i just don't have to. i have put in many years of hard work (on my own time) to get where i am. i started in my industry @ $7 an hour. that was after serving my country (look at that. i was working for you.)
maybe the reason you make 8 bucks an hour is because you don't give a ****. with that attitude, i wouldn't give you a raise. in fact, i would fire you. you don't have to work in that hotel. you don't have to work for those people. and you sure as **** don't have to live in my beautiful country.
you are not to old to enlist in the military branch of your choice. you could make some new friends, develop skills, work for Americans, and get that chip off of your shoulder.

You weren't working for me, my friend. As far as "your" military. You can just keep that. And, I do have to live here, it's a bit expensive to move. You gonna pay?!

I have to agree with grunt0331. I think the point he was trying to make is that if you don't like your situation, do something about it instead of complaining about it. If you want to improve your standard of living it may require you to buckle down and put forth some effort and make sacrifices in order to attain those goals. It looks like you are stuck in a crappy situation and you are looking for someone or something to blame it on when it is most likely YOU that is at fault. We may have our flaws but this is still the GREATEST country in the world and if you don't like it then get a better job so you can afford to move!!

I blame MTV
Thats right MTV. My stepchildren think they deserve what the worthless sacks of meat on "The Hills" have without working for it. They complain about the town home they live in rent free! They complain complain complain. So I canceled or cable and now they really cry. Just threw the boy out last year because he failed at JMU and came home. Now he is living on the beach at Norfolk and the wife slips him money.
The girl thinks being pretty is enough to get what you want in life. She is pissed because I told her "Only if you are a whore" is pretty enough. People at work complain complain complain. Grow some balls and get back to work. Look what happen to the krauts. They had a work ethic and rebuilt a destroyed country. Now they are a bunch of lazy assholes like Americans. We have become to proud to mow our own lawns and clean our own homes. Sad.
I don't know, maybe they are waiting for the big 'O' to save them from having to work for a living. Or maybe we are heading down the same road the Romans did. Sad, fat and lazy and will lose everything our fathers worked so hard for.
