Sal...c46 sprint run?

#1

Post by harkamus »

Heya, guys and gals. I posted this thread over at bladeforums too with moderate success. Figured I'd try posting on the official forums.

The c46 is my all time favorite Spyderco. Any thoughts on maybe a sprint run of this fantastic knife?

Anyone else want a sprint run of the c46 (Lum folding tanto)?

I wouldn't mind if they kept the liner lock as it keeps the nice lines of the knife symmetrical on either side. I also like the idea of a lockback c46. Blade steel could be medium grade to keep price down...but then again the s30v ZT 0350 is sorta cheap. I wouldn't mind a sprint c46 in 154cm, VG10, or maaaaybe s30v (if the pricing would be competitive).

It is one of my favorite looking spydercos and I have been checking ebay for one relentlessly. I doubt spyderco will do a sprint run any time soon as there is another company making a very similar bob lum tanto right now.

If you're referring to the 760ti from Benchmade, it is not similar IMO. It's a framelock. Also the blade geometry look totally different on the c46 and the 760. The 760 is a remake (or should I say re-release) of the Blackwater Lum tanto.

Funky blade, tip down carry only. Even if it is M4, I cant get over the blade shape and clip location.

This one as well as the Lum fixed blade would be a great sprint run.

Can only hope..........

I'm not a fan of the benchmade knife either but it is a similar knife and it would create competition for any spyderco folding tanto released.

Actually, I've read more than my fair share of unfavorable reviews/first impressions of the 760ti. The c46 would definitely have a wider cult following (it already does).

The 760 and the c46 are just differant, I got a 760 recently and the quality is excellent, reasonably priced as well for what you are getting. It really just depends on what you like, the clip is weird on the 760 but its fine once you carry it a little. Its every bit as smooth as my Sebenza and half the price, with better steel!

The C46 is one of my grail knives and I have yet to find one at a reasonable price, I would buy a couple PE at the least if there was a sprint run.

I think Sals spot on with not wanting to compete with another similar knife at this time, maybe somewhere down the road would be nice!

As much as I like the c46,if they do a sprint run I hope it is a little better on the fit and finish.please loose the plastic back spacer also. That is the main thing that has really bugged me about mine.It has great potential to be a very classy knife.Don't get me wrong I like mine fine ,but there is always room for improvement. :)

Spyderco needs more tanto, period. Mark me down for a Lum and how about a new H1 Tanto: Tsugaru Salt?

I absolutely agree. I got tanto fever a couple of weeks ago but couldn't find a single knife I enjoyed the looks of except for the c46. Too bad I can't find one for a good price.

I would bend over backwards for the above pictured knife (C46 G-10 Lum Folding Tanto).

Almite's not a bad idea. However, I think it'd cost more to anodize metal than to get g10 scales.

EDIT: I think the titanium scaled c46 cost quite a bit more than the g10 scaled version back when they were still for sale.

The c46 is the knife that got me interested in folding knives and I've never owned one. A friend I used to work with owned this knife and I always liked it. I'm somewhat new to folding knives but I have owned several ranging anywhere in price from $30 to $180 and none of them compare to this knife. It sucks that my interest in knives sparked after this knife had stopped being made. Please bring back this knife so that those of us new to knives can have a chance to own one. I know that these can sometimes be found on ebay; however, I'm about to start graduate school and it's very difficult for me (or anyone else for that matter in this economy) to save the $200+ dollars to buy the c46 on the rare ocassion that it pops up on ebay. The c46 is by far my favorite folder.

Hi Harkamus,

Thanx for the suggestion and encouragement and welcome ot the Spyderco forum.

As mentioned, another company is currently making a "Bo Lum Tanto" collaboration. It would be tacky to do a similar promotion at this time, and it probably wouldn't be a good business move either.

Hi Xomoi,

Wecome to the Spyderco forum. We do bring back requested models for sprint runs for the very reason that there is interest and the older disco'd models are very hard to find. We change stuff on the model so it isn't confused with the earlier version and the new sprint doesn't hurt collector value of the model. It does offer an opportunity to obtain one, albeit a little different.

As far as "Tanto's" go, we've done 2 Lum folders (G-10 & Ti) and one Lum fixed blade. People love them or don't.

If we were going to do another Lum design, I have a few. Bob made a few designs for us over the years. I would probably go with his larger Chinese folder design and his smaller Chnese folder design before we'd remake the Tanto.

We do appreciate the interest and the request. We have many designs in-the-works waiting for engineering time and factory capacity. We try to bring out 3 or 4 sprints per year, but they do offer their challenges.

"smaller Chinese folder"

A Lum Chinese that would be Dragonfly sized? You know all those people who stand in line and camp out for days whenever there is a new iPhone? I would do that. OK, well maybe I wouldn't go to that extreme, but you get the idea. :p

Camping outside for days outside the SFO in golden could be pretty challenging in the winter months.
