Am I strange?

#1

Post by Sam Vimes »

I don't own and have never owned a single Delica. I got rid of the one and only Endura I ever had. Am I alone in swimming against the tide where these are concerned? I'm just not remotely fussed by them and every time I look at them I can think of several different Spydies I'd rather own. Are they as universally popular as they sometimes seem or are there other heretics out there? ;) :D

Nope, I own over 60 spydies and I never had a single delica, but the funny thing is that I like it. About the endura, I have 2, a regular endura 3 PS and an E4 wave PE and you should give it a try, after some practice it is very fast to put in action!!! :)

Nope, there's nothing wrong with that. As a matter of fact, I feel the same way you do, but towards the Military.

OK, here's my lightning rod 2 cents. I had a delica, but sold it years ago - mostly because I didnt care for the FRN handle. For some reason, even though its nice and lightweight, I dont care for FRN. I know thats not a normal thought process, but my preferences are for mostly for G10 and some CF.

I am not Delica/Endura fan either, used to have few, all are gone now.

I just got my first delica and the only reason I got it was because its the white one. I have had a salt 1 for a while so I guess that kinda counts. I generally prefer the larger blades and full flat grinds.

Not really strange. Its a Medium knife.
I prefer little big knifes, or 3 1/2 & up.

I get what your saying........ 100%

Its probably great if you only want (1) to carry.
But IMO its better to have other options.

Had a white one as well, med. size and combo blade made it go away..............

Nope, you're not weird. The closest thing to a Delica I've ever owned is a pair of Tasmans. The Delica 4 handle doesn't do it for my big hands.

It's funny you say that; for the longest time, I just didn't "get" the Millie. I traded my rarely-used C111 Captain for a CE Millie, and let me tell ya, the thing just grew on me.

The delica is one I never warmed up to. I even ended up getting a ZDP SE version, and while I loved the steel and serrations, I still didn't like the edge geometry or handle.

Well, I ended up loosing my delica somewhere, and I guess I never really cared to buy a new one.

I figure, why buy the "every man" models when you can get something special that will wok perfect for you?

BTW, I think the endura works much better for me :D

From a practical standpoint the Delica and Endura are great values and workhorses. But since I'm an elitist, I need the extra style and marginal performance improvements of many of the other models.

No, I don't think you are strange. I have PE & SE versions of both the Endura and the Delica, and while I think the Delica is a great size, shape and steel, I really don't like the sabre grind, so I don't use it at all.

I have more Delicas than any other Spyderco model.
D1 x 5
D2 x 1
D3 x 1
D4 x 3
I have lots of knives to choose from, but the Delica is one that most often finds its way into my pocket when I need a knife for work. It may not be the best slicer, or the best looking, or fanciest knife in the line up, but it does lots of things well enough for me. Try one, you might like it. ;)
So many knives, so few pockets... :)

MCM, i think you hit the nail on the head. Delica's were the first Spydie's i ever had. I only had one knife for the longest time and that's what i carried. After I started lurking on this site, the Delica has dropped from my preferred list.

I still like it, especially if someone wants to "borrow" a knife it's what i give them, and what i leave in my car/bike for emergencies.

I've graduated to more complete knives. Tho I still recommend a Delica too many people.

You're from the UK and not terrified by the mere thought of a locking folder. So yes, you are strange. ;) :D

As for your lack of interest in the Delica, nothing appeals to everyone and mass appeal is rarely an indication of true merit. I do own a few Delicas, but there are quite a few Spyderco which I find more attractive, more comfortable in hand, or both.

I own three variations of the Endura (E1 clipless, E4Wpe and E4se) and find it to be a near perfect "full sized" folding knife. I've been through several Delicas and just couldn't learn to love 'em, especially when compared to the similar sized Native.

I carried an Endura for a while then got a S30V Millie, thinking I had moved on past the pedestrian Endura, that I was too good for it I guess. Well, I carried it for 2 1/2 years before someone gave me a SS E2 (AUS-6) for Christmas, it took all of 10 minutes to usurp the Millie. Everything about the E2 just worked. I have progressed to the G-10 E4 however now.

Cliffnotes - Don't overlook the Delica/Endura just because you think they are too "everyman" enough for you.

Personally I love the Delica, but I have the exact same thing with the Native.

That's the only Spydie that does absolutely nothing for me. Even if it had serrations to the very tip and beyond I wouldn't carry one. :(

I owned a few but gave/traded them all away.

Have the same with all the waved models, but I'd sooner buy a Delica Wave/SE than a Native :o

That made me smile and I'll take it as a compliment. ;) :D
You are right, lockers don't worry me in the slightest. I'll carry one every time that I have good reason. However, for those times where the only reason I've got is just in case then I'll happily carry one of my UKPKs or a T-Mag.

P.S. Looks like a CF Stretch II will be mine shortly. It's going to cost me my green Manix but I suspect it'll be worth it! ;) You are a bad influence Deacon. ;) :D :p

Finally! I've found an Endura that I really like. :) Just got hold of a C10GPFG, full flat grind, G-10 and all at a stupidly low price (I don't suppose that hurts my liking). It's not likely to overtake the Stretches or UKPKs in my affections but it's nice knife and grabs me in a way that previous Enduras haven't. I guess that I've simply come to appreciate full flat grind and, to a slightly lesser extent, G-10. Transforms a knife that didn't do anything for me into one I like a lot. :)
However, if these are being sold off at the price I managed to get mine for I can only assume that they are on the about to be discontinued list. Shame.
