Manix 2 Photo Spread

#1

Post by The Deacon »

As some of you may remember, Sal offered to send me the Manix 2 pilot to photograph and test. It arrived a few hours ago, and knowing everyone is anxious to see some stills of it, I figured I'd post some as quickly as I could. The specs and my first impressions are at the bottom of the third group of photos...

Last batch, a few taken outdoors...

...and the obligatory comparison shots with the original C95 and C101...

...and finally, a shot "in hand"...

Initial impressions: Like its predecessors, the Manix 2 is a beefy knife. As can be seen in the photos, its dimenesions are pretty close to those of the C101 83mm Manix. Operation is extremely smooth and the action a bit lighter than the 83mm Manix due, I'm sure, to the ball lock. Fit and finish are impressive. The liners, as you may have noticed, have jimping which extends beyond the edge of the scales. This gives the Manix 2 a unique feel. The handle allows me a full four finger grip behind the choil.

Dimensions:
Overall: 8" 203mm
Closed: 4 5/8" 117mm
Blade: 3 3/8" 86mm
Edge: 2 7/8" 73mm
Weight 5 3/8 oz 150 grams

Have been asked to carry, use, and report on this so stay tuned.

Looks like a real hand filler, all it needs is a Full Flat Grind. :D

Great pics.

Every time I see the Manix 2 it makes me even more giddy about the idea of a Poppa Manix.

Thanks for all the pics. 2009 is going to be a lean knife year for me, but this one is definitely a must-have. Didn't someone say the Manix 2 would be offered in two sizes? I'd love to have one as big or bigger than the original.

Deacon, you are a lucky man, though of course very deserving man, to get first crack at the Manix 2. Your pictures are great, and that knife just looks as beefy and ergonomic as it can be. I'm a big fan of the Ball Lock, the D'Allara I handled was the smoothest folder I've ever used. In fact that D'Allara seemed so beefy that I can't wait for an FRN version of the Manix 2 to come out, as I would have no worries at all about the strength of it. I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on the knife, as I really respect your opinions and can't wait for some real world feedback on this succesor to a legend (I will never get rid of my Manix). My wallet is going to take a hit when this one gets released, but I'm sure it will be worth every penny and more. With my luck the Stretch 2 FRN will get released at the same time and I'll have to choose between the two. That would be too cruel. Then I'll have to start saving for the soon to come sprint runs in other steels. I'm just a sucker for Spydercos!

Excellent excellent photos. Thank you very much.

I have a couple questions if you wouldn't mind....

The jimping looks rough.... How's it feel?

Also, which *version of the knife is that? I mean what would it be called ... Concept, Proto, Pilot, production....?

....How likely is it that we are going to see a change between that and the Production "on-the-shelves" model

Thanks so much again :)

THanks for the pics. Cool looking knife.

How is the G10 compared to the original? I ask because from the pics it looks kinda like the G10 on the Tenacious (being a little less gritty and a bit more smooth). The liners don't look as finished either. Also, I wonder what's up with the 154CM and the grind? That's a new one. :)

Also is that backspacer thingy like clear plastic or stainless or what? Can't see it too well. I'm just all excited. I know you have a lot of questions to answer. :D

Thanks again for sharing. That looks awesome with the caged ball lock. WoohoO!

154cm with the right heat treat is great steel IMO, I wouldn't hesitate to buy any blade with that steel from a reputable maker. Last time I looked at steel prices 154cm was cheaper than s30v and would most likely help keep costs down. As far as the grind, the manix is supposed to be tough and you give up a lot of toughness for better cutting with a full flat grind. FFG's work very well but its nice to see a change, I bet the new manix is extremely durable. Looks like a very nice knife, Is there going to be a larger version?

Normally, I'd agree, but I've been slicing cardboard with it, my C101 83mm Manix, and my CF Stretch II and have been quite impressed. Cuts better than the C101 and darn near as well as the Stretch. Am thinking the slightly thinner blade, compared with the C101 makes up for the grind. Don't have a micrometer, but I'd say it's about 3.5mm, can say for sure it's thinner than the C101 and thicker than the Stretch.

Sure, I'd just ask that you say where they came from.

Clock, I'd say the jimping is very aggressive, but very smooth, if that makes any sense. No roughness, no sharp edges, no burrs, but it sticks out enough above the scales that you absolutely know it's there.

As for the other, hope Sal doesn't mind if I quote his letter which accompanied the knife "This one is a pilot piece and it is as the production pieces will be." Based on that, I'd say there won't be any major changes. I do hope there'll be one very minor one. Someone forgot to tap the clip screw holes in the left liner. :( Sal said use it, so that was the first thing I tried to do when I took it out of the box. :o :D

David, I think the G-10 has the same pattern as the Manix and 83mm Manix, but it does seem a bit smoother to the touch. Not as smooth as the Tenacious, and definitely not that pattern.

Backspacer is metal. with what looks like a bead blast finish. Can't say for sure just what it is, don't have a magnet small enough to test it without hitting the steel liners.

Great job Paul. Very excited about your user reviews. I won't ask any questions yet, looks like you have enough to answer already. You know what, I do have one. Would you ever EDC a Manix 2? :D
