female perspective on spydies via girlfriend

#1

Post by clovisc »

i'll preface this by saying that my girlfriend is extremely smart, and usually right about everything. she's the director of a local non-profit, and works part time at another non-profit, assuring OSHA compliance for oil spill response.

she's got a few spydies... captain is her favorite... also a cricket PE, centofante 3, large rescue, and a meadowlark. she's become something of a knife snob...

anyhoo... i showed her a picture of a purple ladybug, because purple is her favorite color. her response:

"psh. it's so small, though. girls don't want little purple knives, they want BIG purple knives."

so i reminded her of my pink endura. "i don't like pink, though," she said. "not all girls like pink."

and then she repeated it again.

"girls want BIG PURPLE KNIVES."

"all girls?" i asked.

"YES."

so... I'm curious... any other feminine agreement on this? Big purple knives??

haha you're girlfriend is awesome.
i'd say, not all girls. some, like your gf seem to like classic black as well (e.g. her captain)

im sure it ranges and depends on the girl in the end :D

LOL...pretty smart yourself, it sounds... ;)

I don't care if it's big purple, miniscule purple, medium purple, or imaginary purple, as long as it's purple I'm hooked....

Now that I've got that out of the way, well, I already have 2 purple ladybugs, and it sho' would be nice to have a delica-sized purple knife...or a purple hawkbill, harpy-sized, maybe...!!!!! :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:

Lordy! :D

My girlfriend, although not a knife carrier, certainly uses the byrds I leave lying around for household tasks, etc. She also got me an ATR for xmas....

Anyway, showed her this thread. Without any reference of size, etc. She wants a GREEN JESTER more than a BIG purple knife.

Funny that this should come up....This week I sold a Pink Knife (not spyderco) to a guy who bought it for his girlfriend, his only concern was that she didn't like pink...I told him to tell her it's cinnamon....he told her that but she said the box said pink  ...she liked it anyway....LOL Doc :D

High level cutting performance comes in many sizes, so as her whims change there will be a Spyderco to cover them. ;)

Well, I hope not. I'm planning to get my little sister a purple Ladybug for her birthday. She saw my Lava and said she wanted one, but I'm thinking that the Lava might turn out too heavy and maybe too specialized of a blade shape (?) in the long run. Maybe I shouldn't second-guess her, though...

My experience with the "female perspective" centers around pocket clips. A knife clipped to the pocket, for many women, is just not a viable fashion accessory, and they tend to keep a knife in a purse or handbag instead. Hence my choice of a MOPA Kiwi for my girlfriend (which she often pulls from her purse to cut something :) .). I got my big sister an etched Dragonfly, and she also loves the knife but doesn't use the pocket clip.

pink, purple, black,SS, w/e, i'd be happy with any Spyderco as a gift. Re: size, i love my Chinook, but almost never carry it, too big. And surprisingly, I never carry my native. Mostly I carry my SS SE Delica, or my dagger.

When it comes to knives, my wife loves blue, carries black, accepts green, but never, I say never would carry pink (at least so she claims). Hummm, maybe it's time to test her with a pink Delica...

I usually have a half dozen of so ladybugs in my briefcase that I have affixed a company logo on a leather leash. I hand these out as I encounter women in offices etc, who are using Keys, ball points etc, to open boxes, Once they see how easy it is to open a ladybug, and with the hole, they can use the meat of their finger to pull the blade out, rather than breaking some expensive nail salon bits, they are more than happy to keep me in mind for orders on other stuff.

A comment from one of the staff from South Africa was that women prefered pink knives and large was just fine. Pink seemed to make it okay for a girl to carry a big knife.

I've recently considered getting a pink knife, even though I'm not a girl. The reaction I would get for taking a monster knife out of my pocket would be "seriously dude, pink?" instead of "oh my word, why do you need a bucher knife?!"

Just something different.

(hmm, not much to do with female perspective, but, perhaps some insight on pink knives)

see, now this makes perfect sense to me.

i think my girlfriend just gets way too excited about the color purple, and tends to distort reality a bit... :D

its truly amazing how color changes people's perception of knives, and helps make them more socially acceptable.

Stereotypes

Post by Ed Schempp »

It is tough getting by stereotypes. I got a better perspective on women a few years ago on a similar thread. I recommended a couple of Spydeco's smaller more elegant designs and Simona posted her love of large knives particularly the Military.

What I take away from this experience is to ask the lady what she prefers...Take Care...Ed

Yes, definitely! I bought 2 non-Spydercos-Mouse & mini-grip, just because they were purple. Now, if I could have a purple Endura or Meerkat (probably my favorite little knife), I'd be deliriously happy...
