Anyone ever get clips that are too close to the handle?

#1

Post by Fred Sanford »

I just wondered if anyone has ever gotten a clip on either a Delica 3 or Endura 3 or any of the other knives that have been kinda "smashed" down. Meaning too close to the FRN? Knives that use these clips still today are knives like the Salt 1, Pacific Salt, Saver Salt, Rescue, Native, Atlantic Salt, and maybe a few others.

I mean like smashed down right from the factory so that you could pretty much not get them on your pants pocket but about maybe 1/3 or 1/2 of the way down due to there not being enough room between the FRN and the inside of the clip.

If so.......what'd ya do?

sounds defective, david. better mail it to me, so that i can dispose of it safely and properly. i'll be a sport, and even do it for free...

if you don't like the tension on the clip, you can easily enough remove it from the knife, and bend it carefully with a pair of pliers (perhaps also use a vise, if need be), and tune it to your liking. the same technique can be used to tighten a clip that has worked itself a bit lose.

as for me, i like them tight. they loosen up if you carry and use them...

I know exactly what David is talking about. I have the same clip on my Pacific Salt. The distance between the FRN and the clip itself is much smaller than your average Spyderco clip. Basically, the pocket clip sticks out from the knife much less.

I translate this to fewer snags and less scratching of my pocket clip on the furniture.

I love this clip!!!!

I pretty regularly "tune" my pocket clips to my liking. Clovisc basically has the procedure down. I find the barrel bolt type clip is the easiest to tune.

Yes, I've owned two knives with bolt-style clips that do not extend far enough from the handle. The clearance of these clips was probably about 2mm, compared to the 3mm clearance on all of my other bolt style clips [mind you these are just estimates off the top of my head]. I don't recall the particular models that they came with but I believe they were both on Salt models.

I absolutely hated those clips. Like David mentioned, they are not very functional since the hemmed edge of a pocket would jam between the handle and the narrow clip. I could only push it down about half way before it would get too tight.

Needless to say, I took those clips off and switched them with more functional bolt-style clips from other models.

From what I've seen and heard, this seems to be more common to the barrel-bolt style clip. Personally, I've never had this issue but then I shy away from models with the barrel-bolt clip due to personal preference. I imagine those titanium clips on the salts might be a bit more difficult to "re-bend."

That is EXACTLY what I am talking about.

I have had 3 Salt I's like this, and just got a replacement clip for it, and it is no different. So it kinda doesn't help. I have also tried to rebending one and ended up ruining it.

Looks like the recess where the barrel bolt is, is too deep,You might be able to put a washer in to raise the clip higher.

Guys, the recess is not too deep because it's the same on both sides and it's also the same as the other Salt I's that I have. If I take my 1 good clip off and put it on any of my Salts it is perfect. :)

If it were mine, I'd probably just dig my vise out of storage, grab the needlenose pliers, and have at it. Definitely not right the way it is, a call to W&R might be in order. Here's a pic of mine.

david, i don't know why, but it seems to me like you've had so many knives with issues. i've never had a problem with any of my spydies.
