Another help me decide

#1

Post by Bluntrauma »

I know these are done to death but I have a problem. I cannot for the life of me make myself use some of my new knives. I just got a D2 para and a new J.D.Smith. I just have an issue with turning these knives into users......yet......which brings me to me request.

I want my next purchase to be a user right out of the box. I want a smallish knife to put right to work. I have no special circumstances for use of this knife other than EDC.

I am stuck between an SS PE Delica and a PE Salt. They are roughly the size I am looking for. If you could choose one of them which would you choose and why? Thanks for your help.

Aloha Bluntrauma,

Ah, that one is easy for me: PE Salt. Only because of the environment I live in and I tell you, H1 has been a blessing...RUST FREE!!! Something I never thought possible in a pocket knife! :)

Aside from that, it gets better with use, lightweight, almost zero maintenance. Granted it scratches pretty easy, and might not hold an edge as long as VG10, but for a lightweight outta the box USER...

PE SALT is hard to beat IMHO. :o

God bless and take care!

Once you use your Para D2, you probably don't need to buy any other knife, which can be a good thing or the other way around. :p

If you HAVE to buy a smaller knife, buy a D4 G10 :D probably the best slicing user from Spyderco right now

Thanks Chad and LowTEC. I have been looking at the G-10 Delica for awhile but it being one of the sprints, I know I'll have the same issue with using it. It's sad really. Maybe I should just get one and key it so I won't feel bad about using it. I have been looking for a good used para in black and a used PE caly3. I figured if I get em used I won't mind carrying them.

So Chad, does the HI not hold an edge like the VG10? I don't know much about the steel.

PE Salt if corrosion might be an issue for you, otherwise, I'd get a PE FRN D4. PM me here on this forum for another option.

Hey buddy,

Man, that cracked me up..."keying" a knife to use it?!?

Anyway, from what I have experienced with H1, no. You can make it spooky sharp, but I noticed VG10 holds longer. At least until I hit that point in H1 where it becomes "better" with use...then it might outperform VG10. ;)

I simply enjoy the fact that H1 is so maintenance free...which is a point that may be moot to you...but I just love the stuff. :o

Sadly there is more truth in that statement than I care to admit. God bless to you too Chad. Thanks for the advice!!!!

I read some advice on a post somewhere but i cant remember where, anyway he said buy two knives, put one in safe queens and use the other one. That sounded like advice, but that also depends on how much green you have in your wallet.

I'd get the Salt, they make great "beater" knives. I've got a clipless Pacific I carry loose in my pocket for things I don't want to use my other :spyder: s for. Also great for when someone wants to borrow a knife.

The Salts have a hollow saber grind, which I prefer over the flat saber of the Delica. IIRC, Sal said that H-1 tested 20% higher than VG-10 in tensile strength, so it can take some serious abuse.

As reported by others, the edge retention of H-1 gets better with use. That's another incentive to use a Salt.

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.

I completely agree,i have pacific salt an it has been a reel good workhorse. And the fact that it is a work hardened steel.H1 is fantastic. :)

New knives are like new pickup trucks. You can't enjoy them until you get them dirty and a few whiskey bumps on them. Why spend your money on new knives and then turn around a have to go out and buy another one for an EDC. Take those new ones cut something disgusting and get em good and dirty then you can find out which one is the best. You might save your self some money for some good micro brews.

I'd put the JD Smith to use. Failing that and out of the 2 choices you give us... I'd go for the Salt :P

I abuse my Salt a lot - it doesn't die !!!

AFAIK, the G-10 Delica is a regular production piece, not a Sprint. Now you can get one and use it hard with no worries. :) It's the best of the Delica line, IMO.

That's such a perfect analogy. It's like you have to use it to christen it, make it ready to become a part of you and your life. It's deep, but so true. I should become a knife philosopher.

Wait! I just realized that Spyderco does not have a philosopher working for them.

1. Philosophers are considered to question things.
2. We learn by answering said questions.
3. Spyderco needs to learn to make knives better and more intuitive.
4. Therefore, Spyderco should hire a philosopher

1. Spyderco needs a philosopher.
2. I am now a philosopher.
3. The original is generally better than a copy.
4. I am the original founder of the Spyderco philosopher idea.
5. I am the founding Spyderco Philosopher.
6. Therefore, Spyderco should hire me as their philosopher

Now that we have established that I am logically a new employee of the best knife company in the world. I can finish my philosophy homework.

I didn't know that. Thanks for the correction. :) I am still not sure which knife I'm going to get. I was thinking about it last night and it occurred to me that half the use my knife gets at work is on food. I'm always cutting fruit, sandwiches, meat, etc...

Now I'm not sure if there is a perfect knife for handling the rough stuff and the food. Not too crazy about the thickness of the blade for fruit with my Delica or Endura so wondering if I'll have the same issue with the H1.

Maybe I'm just too picky and should quit over thinking it.

Hey Blunt,

The FFG blades will cut fruits better than the hollow ground ones. I prefer to use my Military to cut fruits only for its slightly longer blade length. The FG Smith might be a better slicer than the FG Delica. Try them both :D You'll find out first hand that way :p

Blunt trauma, you should buy a nice used knife for your next purchase so you won't mind using it.
