What's up with the new Dragonfly?

#1

Post by CTfam »

I held a Dragonfly the other day and I think it would make a great EDC when I want to carry loose in a suit pocket. I read on here they are coming out with a G-10 version with a wire clip. That sounds like a great design but the new catalog has the D'fly the same. What gives? I'd wait for the newer version if it's coming out soon. Any word on this?

The way I've read Sal's comments, the new version of the Dragonfly is under development, along with several dozen other projects, but it is not coming out anytime soon. 2009 Catalog shows models currently in production, and those sheduled to make it into production within the next six or seven months and, as you already noticed, the G-10 Dragonfly is not in there. That's no guarantee it won't appear sooner, we've gotten surprised before, but it's a pretty good indicator.

Thanks for the response. I just got my first Spyderco knives. A Delica and a Ladybug. I would like something right in the middle as far as size and I think the D'fly would be a winner. I'm not thrilled about the plastic clip but I guess I'll give it a shot. When they add G-10, jimping and a removable wire clip it may be the greatest EDC ever for my needs. I just hope they keep it light. I'll be waiting!

I hear you. I'm left handed, so the FRN Dragonfly has never worked for me. The G-10 Dragonfly will fill a niche in Spyderco's lineup that, has been empty for quite a while.

The Urban looks PERFECT but it has no lock. :( That breaks my heart. If they put a back lock on that thing I'd buy one for everyone in my family. :)

If you are looking for a knive of that size, but with a metal clip, and four way attachment of the clip, take a look at the Byrd Robin. It comes in steel, G-10and FRN varieties. I have an FRN one that I especially like.

I just looked at that model. Very interesting. For the price I guess I'll give it a shot. How's the 8CR13MOV steel? I don't know anything about it.

Well that just threw my whole list for a loop. I was planning on buying a new Dragonfly after looking at the one I got for my Dad. But if a new one with G10 is coming out I will just wait for that. I have been off and on about getting one because I didn't like the plastic clip.

Although it's a little heavier, I highly recommend the SS Dragonfly. The clip is metal and L/R interchangeable. At 2.5 oz, it's borderline for shirt pocket carry, but should be just fine in a jacket or pants pocket. Also, the little guy is super classy and non-threatening. Mine has been spending a lot of time in my pocket lately, doing jobs that I normally would use a bigger knife for, and doing them just fine. I'll be packing it Christmas morning, as my wife's family is skittish around knives and smaller is better.

I placed an order earlier for a Byrd Robin and a sharpmaker... :D

John E,

I'm taking your word on the Robin. Heck, it was $20, how could I not pick it up. It seems like my dream EDC. If it was in VG-10 and had a round Spyderhole it would be a hit but I'll give it a shot. Thanks for everything fellas. I'm loving this site so far! :D

got the etched Dfly, its very nice....but the G10 would be ideal weight to replace the ugly FRN clip.

Caly 3

Check out the Caly 3 if you haven't yet. It might be larger than what you're looking for as it is about the same size as the Delica, but it has G10, wire clip, and a lock back. In my opinion it's close to the perfect small/medium knife for all around use.

I too am looking forward to the G10 Dragonfly; as long as it has the option of left-handed clip carry and I hope that the G10 will be orange.

i agree that the SS dragonfly is an awesome choice... my ATS55 'fly has been a favorited EDC knife for the last 3 years. although, i believe you're mistaken about the clip being L/R interchangeable ... unless the newer dragonflies are drilled for carry on either side??

Sorry, you're right about the clip. I was thinking removable, but wrote interchangeable. As to the above, I would love a Caly3, but am not at a place to be spending $100+ on a pocketknife. I'm hoping that the new Sage will be closer to my price range, being made in Taiwan with no CF. I'm sure CF is a great material, but it does jack up the price.

Well, I'm not sure the new one will cost any less. Titanium is another expensive material. Most folks are thinking the Sage RIL will cost more that the current one.

I've looked at the Caly3 and it is next on my list. I carry a Delica and I like that size blade when dressed casual. However, I'm in a suit most of the week and I carry loose in the pocket. Something a little shorter when folded up would be ideal. Also, I wouldn't need the clip so I would just take it off.

In regards to the SS D'fly, does it show scratches? When I carry loose in the pocket I keep it with the keys. I'd imagine the finish would get beat up pretty bad with the SS.

I needed something in this role and found the Kiwi an excellent choice. Small, no clip, but very powerful in use.

I have a hard time understanding why the Caly III keeps getting suggested as an alternative to the Dragonfly. The Caly III isn't huge by many standards, but it is huge compared to the Dragonfly.

I just don't see them as interchangeable in size (??????).

Plus, the Caly III weighs 86 grams compared to 33 grams for the Dragonfly in FRN.

Sweet pics DWRW, Now I MUST get a Caly3 AND a Dragonfly. :D That carbon fiber does look nice but I think I'm going to go with G-10.

Also, I can't find a D'fly in VG-10 anywhere but Spyderco.com. Where did you get yours? Every site I see has it listed as AUS-8.
