Fixed Blades - what do you folks have or carry?
Hey everyone....
As of late I've been doing some woods hiking and when I do that I always have ample stuff on me in case I would ever have to spend the night (or 3) for whatever reason. I always have a SAK, a Spyderco folder, and a fixed blade of some type. Usually the fixed blade is an Ontario TAK-1 strapped to my right leg via it's own sheath and paracord. Sometimes I keep it on my belt but whatever.
So, do any of you folks have a preference on fixed blades? I'm not too fond of Spyderco fixed blades only due to their size and I don't like the blade shape at all. Plus if I am going woods hiking I want good old 1095 and at least a 5" blade.
What say you peeps?
Anyone have any other brands like SOG or TOPS or whatever that they prefer? Even Cold Steel?

I've got a 2.5" Schiller skinner, 3" LHK Skean Dhu, spydie FB01 1st gen (mirror finish, leather sheath, #ed), and a number of CKE's peices that all get rotated (1.5"-5.5").
The 2.5" Tichbourne skinner doesn't get carried a lot, custom job for left hip.
Usually I either carry IWB/back or on my right hip (tip up or down). The FB01 and CKE bowie get the most carry, simply because I can carry em tip up behind my hip.

My ideal fixed blades.
Very interesting thread David :) I have personally become more of a fan of fixed blades than I originally was. I've always liked them but now I'm really getting serious about my fixed blade line up.
As of right now, this point in time I still put my 2 Spyderco Temperance models at the top of the heap. I have a PE & SE model and they are Spyders that I consider "untouchable". In other words there isn't a knife I would trade them for and there isn't a dollar value that would interest me in parting with them.
I have other fixed blades and I use them for a multitude of reasons. Most all of my kitchen knives are Spyderco fixed blade kitchen knives. I find I have more use with a serrated fixed blades. I'm looking forward to Spyderco doing more ergonomic designs on handles. I also have older ones I can't part with like My Buck model 119 and a Ka-bar and a Boker. But my FB Spyders are at the top.

Long Live the SPYDEREDGE Spyderco Hawkbills RULE!!
I usually take a Ontario rat-7 in 1095 when im gonna be in the woods a while. I have a couple benchmades in m2 that i am also very fond of, nimravus and a nimravus cub. Sometimes i use a Ka-bar marine, for the money they are pretty hard to beat in my opinion. I keep a small Gransfors Bruks hatchet in my truck as well.
I think 1095 is one of the better steels out there for blades! Its fairly tough, inexpensive, easy to sharpen and takes a wicked edge!

I have a Gerber Gator that I got with safety points at work. It is actually a nice solid knife, I've heard bad things about Gerbers, but I like it. I usually take it with me while fishing or hiking, I carry it on my belt in the sheath.

If there is a remote chance of spending the night in the woods I want a BIG knife. One that can chop and make shelter. It would be one of the Randall's

I had never been a fixed blade guy until I decided to buy a Greg Lightfoot Woodsman a few years ago. Well, that was the start down a really slippery slope. :) I like tactical stuff mostly and the Japanese style blades appeal to me also.
I've got...
Shane Sibert - Darius, Flash, TAD Explorer II, L.U.K., TAD Pathfinder
Tom Krein TK2
Todd Begg - Zodiac, Tree Frog, Meso, also some daggers designed by his wife Tanya
Emerson La Griffe
Tom Mayo neck knife
Lucas Burnley Kwaiken
RJ Martin Kozuka
Becker BK9
Shivworks Lil' Loco
John Wylie utility knife
The Krein is a great little blade, probably my most carried FB. The Tree Frog is a superb necker, one of my favorite knives from all I've ever owned. The Siberts are excellent users with bulletproof construction. The Becker is good for clearing all kinds of brush and saplings around the yard.
What I don't have yet is a Spyderco fixed blade. The Street Beat is definitely on the list. I'm also interested in the Aqua Salt.

Lately I've been using a M2 benchmade, a really small knife in W1, and that's about it. I have a bunch of others including some really nice ones in 3V, a skinner in Vascowear ( best all around steel IMO), and quite a few others but as my right arm is healing still from reconstructive shoulder surgery I haven't been doing much chopping or heavy work lately.
I use folders far more on a daily basis. Joe

Wow good thread!!!! My ultimate fixed blade right now is my Busse ASH-1 LE (sorry no pics). I have yet to get a sheath for it, but I've tested it trimming the bamboo in my courtyard and I was impressed! It feels soo good in the hand too! I'd love to test it against a Rock Salt.
I'm trying to find an EDC sized fixed blade in the custom world and having a lot of trouble. There's far too many choices! The only one I know I want is a Murray Carter neck knife. Those things are incredible! But I still want a belt knife. I need to go to a good custom show!

Do does anyone like Ontario Rat models or now RAT Cutlery? I like their TAK-1 models and the RAT-5 also.
I'm thinking of grabbing a RAT-5 soon. :) I had a TAK-1 in D2 and it was a good knife. I think the next RAT I get will be in 1095 carbon.
