Barong Dimensions?
Barong Dimensions?
I know the blade is just under 4", but what are the other specs? Kristi, Sal?

I'm an admirer of Spyderco's designs. Using them is like immersing yourself in music or studying a painting in a museum. I buy some "fine" art but my preference is for usable art.
If you could give us a pic of the finished model (with the blade fully ground), that would be great too.
Thanks :)
Thanks :)

Thanks for posting this burning question catamount.
I visited the Spyderco booth this afternoon at Blade West in PDX but, unfortunately, no Barong.
I was all over the pink Native, G10 Police and the carbon fiber textured, good job on the relief/bumpy texture for grip, Sage (bigger than it looks online and nice wire clip works fine on my jeans.
All the best,
oregon

This is the prototype:Agent Starling wrote:No Barong prototype yet?...I bet it will come out in '09, then...![]()

The grind on the production version will extend well past the hole.
Spyderco has gotten the first shipment in, and they will be engraved for CC members. It'll probably be at least a month before the non CC ones are available from dealers.

This is what Mr. Blonde said in his 2008 Amsterdam meet report:flyguy wrote:Half right... Flat grind, but the edge is the same length as the prototype (not extended)
"Mind you, the blade grind stop kind of abruptly at the opening hole in this prototype. The grind on the production model will curve under the hole (remain in full stock thickness) and will go much further towards the heel of the blade. So there will be a lot more edgelength in the final production model."

Have you seen the production version? Are you saying that the grind is the same as on the prototype pictured above?
Kristi,
this is a new model, so I assume the first 200 you get in will go to CC members?

AFAIK it is regular production, meaning they will be produced as long as there is demand. It will be "limited" by how many the maker can produce each month. Demand may outstrip supply.Doc Pyres wrote:Drat, my memory fails me as to whether the Barong will be limited or regular production.

If he saw the Barong at a show, chances are high that it was the prototype. I've recently come into the posession of a custom blade ground by Ed Schempp that demonstrates this 'extended grind'; time and outdoor conditions permitting I'll soon share pics! :Dcatamount wrote:Have you seen the production version? Wouter, would love to see pictures (when time allows). I own a production one, and there is no extended grind. I don't know the story behind the grind (perhaps Ed or Sal could explain).Mr Blonde wrote:If he saw the Barong at a show, chances are high that it was the prototype. It is a great knife. Love the way it opens, closes, then opens again. :D (Even with the liner lock)

Yes, aj1985; I agree with your observation of the grind on the Barong, the production model should have the grind start under the hole. I hope the grind is angled so the hole is missed, this would give the impression of a longer blade. This will add another 3/8 of an inch to the length of the working edge and still give ample room to accommodate the index finger in choking up for fine cutting tasks...Take Care...Ed
So has the above taken place or hasn't it. I would love for some pictures by the forumites.

Well, if you look at the photo on KnifeCenter's site, and compare it with the prototype picture on catamount's, it would appear that the changes Ed requested were made, but that people's exectations as to how much edge would be added were overly optimistic. Grind is angled and does end up under the hole - just barely.aj1985 wrote: Ed Schempp Ed Schempp is offline

Here's the official pic from :spyder: :

The grind doesn't go back as far as I thought it would, but it's still a darn cool knife :D Can't wait to get it.
The picture on the :spyder: site is the Barong, but I think the specs listed are for the Khukri.

Looking at the pic from Knifecenter (which is the knife they received), it looks like the grind does go back a little further than in the pic I posted above:
