Manix taken apart (Lotsa pics! *56K ALERT*)

'Fine print'
I am in no way responsible if you void your warranty or lose parts during the process of disassembly/reassembly. So don't go crying because Brendan made me lose a part and now I have to pay Spyderco to have it fixed.

Went to the beach with it on Saturday...turns out I dunked it in the sand. Oops. Took it apart today to give it a well-deserved cleaning...and found lots of crap (lint, dust and sand all mixed into a slurry...ewww).

*Note, used a T9 key for ALL the screws*

Parts List

-(2) G10 handle scales
-(1) S30V blade
-(2) Pivot screws
-(2) Pivot nuts
-(1) Clip
-(3) Clip screws
-(1) Lock spring
-(1) Spring support/mid back spacer
-(1) Ball bearing support
-(1) Back spacer
-(2) Teflon washers
-(4) Handle screws

Image
Fully disassembled...relatively few parts and straightforward, just a few screws and it falls apart...didn't find any thread locker

Image
Blade...

Image
Manufactured date???

Image
Skeletonized liner (one of two).

Image
Mid-spine lock assembly (lockbar, spring and back spacer).

Image
One of two G10 scales (you can see where the clip originally lived).

Image
Second G10 scale.

Image
One of two bronze washers.

Image
Best lube ever...used the cloth and wiped down all the parts after cleaning with a toothbrush in warm soapy water...Tuf-Glide was used as assembly lube...all the moving joints were coated in a thin layer of the stuff.

Image
All nice and dry...

Image
Lapped the inside of the G10 to flatten it out...then cleaned it with a healthy dose of WD40 and dried.

Image
Ooh shiny...

Image
Liners put back on the scales.

Yes there are pictures missing...I forgot to take the remainder of the steps...dur

Image
Centred blade.

Image
Clip positioned correctly for tip up carry in order to use my ghetto wave.

Image
Beautiful...

Image
Still couldn't get that crack to go away at the front...perhaps some thinner washers might fix it?

BTW, much thanks to Wouter for posting his Military disassembly and the various tips on cleaning G10 and the parts.

It's true...quick question should I have thread locker on all the screws? I didn't see any on them when I took the knife apart.

Great job with your cleaning Brendan. Excellent photos too. Even the parts of the Manix are tank-like. You can always put some threadlocker in later if you feel things loosening up. Just be careful not to strip the screws and you'll be fine. :D

I forgot to add this in...some WD40 will do wonders to restore that 'black blacker than the blackest to the power of infinity' :)
