Tell me about the tenacious. why so cheap?

Post by colubrid »

I would like to know why the tenacious is priced so much less compared to others which offer the same blade shape, handles and size. Is it poor construction? Is it the budget model???

Why isn't more popular than the endura, caly ect ect?

oh and yes I read this review and even it said the Tenacious was an entry level Spyderco??

Made in China. Low cost production = low end line consumer cost.

Colubrid, don't let the low price point fool you. The Tenacious is a good knife and is a good one to get as a beater/yard knife/giveaway, etc.

BTW, are you into colubrids??

Very cool. I breed some boas (CA and amazons) and am hoping to get my Spilotes to finally go this year.

To keep it on topic, get a Tenacious - great knife that you won't mind abusing, losing or giving away.

I just received a Tenacious that I bought to give to my brother. It's such a nice knife that I'm kind of reconsidering giving it away. :o This thing is VERY impressive for the $30.00 you can find them for. The ergonomics are great, the lock is solid with no play and engages on the left side of the tang (just like my Military), very sharp out of the box, and the fit/finish is great.

The only two issues I can find with it are the blade being slightly off-center and one side of the lanyard hole tube is a little rough. I know an off-center blade can drive some people nuts, but this will be a user so no big deal. The lanyard hole thing is almost too minor to even mention but I was trying to be very picky when looking it over since this knife almost seems to fall in the category of "too cheap not to have some kind of issues."

I've got to say, my Tenacious seems comparable in quality to some ~$60.00-80.00 knives I have from various manufacturers. I would definitely buy it again and I think it makes the perfect inexpensive yet quality gift for the unfortunate knife-less people in your life. :spyder:

The Tenacious is even sharper than a lot of my $100 plus Made in USA knives. Not from Spyderco of course. :)

The Tenacious is extremely well made, regardless of it's price point. It's an inexpensive liner lock, and yet I actually trust the lock, which is saying a lot because I typically dislike linerlocks.

For the $, it's about the best value there is on the market today from anybody and anywhere. I just don't carry mine is the problem. I always reach for a Caly 3, D4, Sage, or Manix. They're all better than the Tenacious IMO. They all cost a fair bit more as well.

I Felt Guilty Buying Another Thing From China, But The Tenacious Is A Quality Knife At A Bargain Price. I've Had Mine For A Month And Can Find No Fault With It. Love Those G10 Handles.

You're forgetting one aspect, high volume. The Chinese maker can put out a lot higher volume of knives than either the Japanese or Golden plants can. Higher volume also takes down the price.

Mine had the same problem and I was able to fix it with almost no effort. I loosened the pivot just a touch and the blade has been centered ever since.

I must say purchasing this knife, I am VERY impressed and thats an understatement. Even though the retail cost is relatively cheap made from china, It in no way feels cheap to me. I would even venture to say if the blade was made from S30v or S90v it would kick the caly 3 out the water. And I know there are alot of calypso fans out there who are going to hate tha comment. Handle and liner is great ergonomics. Even the clip has the screws in a circular shape, which secures around a lanyard hole or the blade pivot screw with possible four way clip. The liner lock is even impressive, as I am used to really thin construction liners that I wouldn't feel comfortable doing a spine wack test with. I usually get into a habit of after opening a liner lock knife to check to make sure it is seated correctly before I grip the handle. Not with this knife, the opening is solid with little blade play. If it were a car, i'd say a ferrari with a neon engine (since of the steel). but overall 9 of 10. Purchase one, you might like it. Also sharp out the box but probably won't hold edge as long as I would perfer.
