ZDP Lum Chinese Folder just landed!

#1

Post by Mr Blonde »

I think is was two years in the making, but as far as I'm concerned it was worth it. The Lum Chinese Folder in ZDP 189 has finally landed! I know the Lum has arrived at a few American doorsteps as well, but I'm pretty sure I got one of the first over here in the Netherlands. So even though I only had time for a few quick shots, due to of and on rain, I had to do it and post them immediately to exercise my bragging rights! ;)

Image

My sample is pretty much perfect in terms of fit and finish. The lock engages the ramp in the first 1/3 of the ramp, the blade is perfectly centered, the almite finished is applied perfectly even and the edge grind seems very symmetric. There are a few microscopic nicks on the inside edge of one handle slab.

Image

The blade came out of the box impressively sharp with a nice bite. ZDP does not interact well with lasers, so the logos aren't as sharply black as with the VG-10 variants of the Chinese Folder. My other ZDP blades also have a slightly lighter or duller tint in the lasered logos. However, these are cosmetic concerns.

Image

I'm pretty happy with the black clip though. To me, it fits better to the handle than a bright stainless steel version. If I ever change my mind, I'm sure I can fit an older clip of my spare green Chinese Folder ;-). Handling this new Lum felt like meeting an old friend. I've EDC'd a Chinese Folder very intensively a few years back. I'll have a lot of fun running this ZDP variant through its paces.

Wow, great pics! The knife looks fantastic. :D

By the way, what kind of pen is that next to the Lum? It looks very cool. It almost has a Spyderco clip. :)

Congrats! I wasn't immediately taken by this model, but I've found the shape is starting to appeal to me. I'd love to get a chance to someday handle one.

Wouter,
Great pictures and great review, as always.
Congratulations on new toy as well.
I really love this knife, I was not fortunate to have the old model, but I am very happy with new one.

Thanks, the Chinese Folder is still my favorite combination of looks and function. The leaf blade is a great slicer.

The pen is my new Surefire Pen. I was looking for a new pen and was pleasantly surprised when this hit the market. Apart from being a sturdy cool looking pen, it is completely adjustable to almost any type of cartridge. There's an internal screw that allows you to adjust the amount of twist needed to open and close the pen. And...the action remains vault-like smooth. I like it a lot.
The clip was also a big reason for me to get this pen. Sometimes, I don't have any pocket-space left for a pen and the usual clips either don't work IWB or on a pocket or they are so sharp they tear into your clothing. Not so with this ti clip.

Great photos as always Wouter. IMHO, the Lum Chinese is one of the two most attractive Spyderco knives ever made, the other being Ed Schempp's original Persian. It's also about the Spyderco liner lock I most sincerely wish came in a left handed version.

Mr. Blonde,

Your pictures are OUTSTANDING! I just got my Lum today. It looks excellent too. Only thing I noticed was the liner made contact right at the left edge of the tang. I guess after a couple of hundred openings it should move over a bit.

Awesome pics Wouter. I really like the black Almite.

Any chance on posting some pics of it beside some other knives just to get an idea of the size of the handle/blade?

If I had my choice I would love to see it next to a Delica, UKPK, or anything else really.

Thanks. :)

Price increase for the Backup? Just the backup or all SF Models?

David, I'll see if I can post some comparison pics this weekend.

How does Spyderco release knives to dealers? In batches? All at once? My retailer hasn't received them yet. I've have been anxiously awaiting these knives for two years. Is there any way to find out when Recon 1 on Ventura Boulevard in Reseda, CA will receive their shipment? They say they have no idea when the knives will arrive.

I can't take the wait any more. :(
