The dangers of carrying small all the time...

#1

Post by spydutch »

Greetings you all :)

As many of you know I'm a big fan of Spyderco's LBK's and very(too maybe??) much concerned with the NKP factor.

Sometimes I try to carry not bigger than my Delica 4/SE, SS Cricket/SE or Ladybug/SE.

Well just yesterday I read another praise(and very rightly so) of the Military, so I decided it was time to change my EDC :)

Man, when I took the Milie out of it's box and whipped it open, I was suddenly a bit freaked out by the size of that big wide serrated blade

I guess this is what you get if you carry small all the time and be too concerned what other people think  :(

Regardless I put the Milie in my pocket :D Let's see for how long it will stay there. Just like in the Endura thread it may "shrink"

Anymore of you have the same thing? I'm very curious.

Thanks for reading

It didn't take long for my Military to shrink to a normal size. Now I wonder how I got along with dinky little knives before it came along.

Arend,

:D I've done this too. It works the other way though too. I had a Military in my pocket for a week or two and then got out a Delica and was like "what is this small weak knife?". I know it's not a small weak knife but it felt that way at the time. I have carried a Salt 1 for a while and then when I go back to a Para or Endura it feels weird.

Been there done that. The millie is intrusive at the beginning, but I am in Montana, so I carry a 4" all the time anymore. It will shrink, and of course, you might even think of larger ones. There is always a use for a Millie. Thats why I own 8 of them. Great Knives! You shall adapt!
I have a small collection.. At least in my mind its small. All respect to Sal and this great company! Collector Club Member #120

It's an excellent knife and doesn't feel huge in your pocket. After a while it doesn't feel so huge. Great purchase, Arend. I always carry a large knife and a small one - different uses, and you have something for the NKP.

- best wishes, Jazz.

I used to think the Para was HUGE!!! Now it seems like a normal size knife, thinking of moving to something Military type size.

Congrats on trying to shrink the Millie Arend :D :p

I have a Millie and a Para which I sometimes carry as they form part of my EDC rotation. I tend to carry LBKs, but lately the C83 Persian is riding with me more often. And the Millie needs some more time in the pocket too. I too have felt that when I carry the larger ones I freak out a bit and get scared to use/ carry it. I suppose no point having it there if you can't really use it, and that's probably why we all carry the smaller ones.

This thread is forcing me to see if I can add my Millie to my keychain :D (thanks for the suggestion Peter ;) don't know why I didn't think of it before...... out with Ladybug keychain , in with Millie !

Datan, I'd like to see a picture of your Millie beside your Ladybug to compare sizes. Good luck fitting that beast on your keychain. :)

Arend, have you considere carrying two knives? One purely for your personal use and one you don't mind using in front of NKPs? Personally, I would not expect anything less from the legendary Spydutch to always carry that beautiful FG D2 SE Millie (!) and perhaps a SE Dragonfly for the NKPs. :D ;)

This is my current dilemma. I'm trying to decide between a mid-size knife of either a Sage, Caly3, or ZDP Delica. Or getting a larger Military, Police, or Mannix model.

I like to carry large knives in general but I just bought a sage 2 days ago. That

is the smallest knife I will carry. The fg cpmd2 para-millie is a great choice for

mid size carry and also less intimidating for weirdo nkp. :o :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :spyder: :D

I just can't go small. I like the Manix and the Military... everything else seems puny. With a pocket holster, you can wear something as large as a BM Skirmish in thin dress pants without any sort of printing or other issue like that.

A big folder will do everything a small folder will do... but not the reverse.

Here's a holster with my keys and a Skirmish, for the right side pocket. I have one made for the Manix, but I didn't have a handy picture.

The military may be long, but it's light and slim. I find it comfortable. I tried a chinook in a pass around and it was very chunky. I have a serrated military that is permanently in my tool box. Some times when replacing parts on cars, it is easier to cut the old part out of there. The serrated military gets in there and seperates.
