Knives, watches, torches and guns.

#1

Post by Sam Vimes »

One thing that strikes me as I weave my way through various forums for each on the web, is how many of us seem to be into all four, knives, watches, torches and guns. Anyone care to theorize as to what is going on here? is there a valid connection between the four? Does anyone care to add anything else to the four?

(I'd add music/hi-fi but I don't see a great deal of evidence that the many share that passion)

For me watches, pens, flashlights, knives, guns, serious HiFi, scooters, cars, flyrods and tackle, leather jackets, westernboots, tools, and a lot more have it over make-up, lipstick, strolers, slimfit diets, sweet wine, hairdo's, handbags, powderboxes, and such.

Celebrate manliness! and "will you please get the Laredo out in front. I'm gonna take it for a spin...."
Enough said.

David,
that's not strictly true, although it does apply to certain types of guns that our American friends have much easier access to. ;)

Its because that is what defines us. What we are willing to lug around everyday without hesitation. Through trial and error, everyone of us has searched and are still searching to upgrade or refine our hard work for these commodities.

Knives, watches, pens, lights etc... are all 'gentleman's tools'. In days of old these 'personal effects' were a way of letting the world know that you're an educated and sophisticated man....some things don't change! :D ;)

I agree with all the above. I might also add photography, motorcycles and flying.

Its simply what defines us.
Specialy knives, and it has something to do with having style, for sheer precision and quality.

My theory is that they can all be considered "Shiny" and there's a bit of Magpie (Crow/Raven whatever) in all of us.

I'm actually not into guns, I don't hunt so there is no need for me to own one really. I do have a 10M Russian air target pistol that I occasionally destroy cans with, and I wouldn't mind having a flintlock musket to play around with and go BANG. :) I love my flashlights, but so far don't have any really expensive ones. I love my Fossil Titanium watch (I can only wear Titanium), but I don't own any others because the Fossil is going on 5 years old and I believe it is indestructable as **** (all the pins in the bracelet have been replaced and it's on the second face). I like knives since I've carried on off and on since I was 4 years old. I don't leave home without one. The whole Spyderco thing is pretty good, I like some of their knives, but after buying my top four (I'm on three now) I'm likely going to just use them and not get anymore. I mean who needs 20 knives at a time? Maybe a bad question to ask you guys. :D

LOL, I remember seeing a picture of Daywalker somewhere with like 20 knives clipped on him!!!
I am afflicted by the same illness as the rest of you, knives, flashlights, I love Luminox watches. So far no guns...

My initial thought was "Torches" ?????? Then I realized that I have four different types of torches. I really only use them for work. I didn't know that there was a forum for them. The cell phone has a clock.

Thanks for the reminder, my birthdays have caught up with my guns, so I need to buy a couple more. ;)

Luckily, I haven't been bitten too hard by the flashlight bug. Probably because the nearest Surefire dealer is over a hundred miles away.

Watches...I have a few, but I wear my Seiko Automatic 200m dive watch all the time.

Knives...so what if I could carry a different knife every day for a year and a half without repeating? Everyone should be able to.

After all, these things are the building blocks of civilization. :D

yes to all the above, however I haven't mastered the art of throwing myself at the ground and *missing*, yet**

**Douglas Adams' definition of flying; "There is an art to flying, or rather a knack. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Clearly, it is this second part, the missing, that provides the difficulties."
