Cheap Sharpener for a Delica 4

#1

Post by jasonklass »

I'm looking for recommendations for a cheap (but good) sharpener for my Delica 4s. One is plain edge and one is half-serrated. I'd like one sharpener that could handle both. Any suggestions? I'd like to get the Sharpmaker but don't want to spend that much. Any links to sharpeners that are fairly decent for around $10-$20 would be much appreciated. :)

Don't waste your money and buy twice. First you buy the cheap sharpener... it sucks and it does not work... Then you buy a Sharpmaker and it works... true cost higher than just buying a Sharpmaker in the first place. My advice is buy a Sharpmaker and get the extra Diamond stones instead of wasting money on the "cheap sharpener" and have a good tool that will last a lifetime. Buying the right tool the first time is always cheaper than buying tools untill you get the right one. Just my .2 cents YMMV!!! :)

I have always recommended those cheap yellow V Sharpeners that you get at Wal-Mart. You can get them for like 5 dollars.

They will not get your knife shaving sharp. They won't get them paper-cutting sharp. But it will make it usably-sharp.

They take of the burs, and the folds of metal on the bevel. Which are what make it the most-unsharp....

Then, once in a while, Just mail the knife back to Spydie-Spa for a real sharpening every now and then... and then just de-bur when you need it.

Or......buy the $5 dollar import....and send it in to get it sharp???

My point exactly. If you want to sharpen a knife yourself and get it hair poppin sharp.. get the Sharpmaker. :)

I'll second these comments. Buying a Sharpmaker early on was one of the best moves I ever made. Well worth the money. As with many things, you get what you pay for when it comes to sharpeners.

Let me jump in here and ask a quick question. How easy is it to sharpen SE knives with the sharpmaker? I only have PE knives, and I can get them crazy shrp on my bench stones. I have thought about a SE knife, but I don't have a way to sharpen them.

Question over, sorry for hijacking your thread. :o

As everyone here has stated, just buy the sharpmaker from the start. If you already spent the money on a decent knife, why would you buy a cheap sharpener that doesn't do the knife justice? I liked the Sm so much that I went out and bought 2. One for my house and one for my apt. Trust me, they are well worth the money.

I should have bought the sharpmaker in the first place instead of wasting money on a Lansky system which I only used one time

Saving up for the Sharpmaker is your best bet, it performs much better than it costs.

I would really suggest getting a ceramic stone from spyderco. They are among the best sharpeners I have had experience with (as long as you can sharpen freehand, it's not that hard, but a little bit tricky).

Even in the factory outlet store, the profiles can be had for about $30 a piece, while the ceramic files are about half that (I'd suggest getting a 1/2" round, it fits perfectly into the large scallops on serrations and works great for plain edge). I'm also sure that you can find them for much less through other online stores.

I guarantee you I spent far more on a drawer full of cheap sharpeners that never really worked than the cost of 1 sharpmaker. Learn from all of our mistakes, spend a little more up front and save yourself a lot of hassle.

I agree with everyone else. Get the sharpmaker and call it good. Don't waste the $ on the cheap stuff.

Most of my knives are SE and the sharpmaker is the only way to fly to get the SE back to factory.

Get the Sharpmaker ! to supplement it get the Byrd Ducksfoot as well. Or if you prefer get the Ducksfoot first, but I highly recommend you do not skimp on the Sharpmaker. It really isn't that expensive if you consider how much you'll save in the long run. Also, if you have dull knives they'll sit in your drawer as an unused resource and that is more wasteful.
