Paramilitary With Wire Clip

#1

Post by vivi »

http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii20 ... reClip.jpg

I saw that picture and knew I wanted the same thing done for right handed carry.

So I bought a Paramilitary.

Then I emailed the person who did that mod. Didn't hear anything back (Hopefully used his current email address).

I made some threads asking if anyone else can do it.

Nothing.

So this Para has sat in a drawer, unused, for over a month.

Can you, pretty-please, help me find ANYONE who can do a right handed tip-up wire clip for my Para, so I can start carrying it?

It's frustrating knowing this is possible, but not knowing who to go to or owning the tools to do it myself. I'm about to go buy them and give it a shot, I'm sick of waiting.

(Before you say something, I realize I can carry it as is. I don't like tip down draw and tip down knives generally are much more uncomfortable when digging around in the pocket for something. I always pick a UKPK or my tip up Millie over this when putting a knife on for the day. I know this knife won't see regular carry until it gets tip up.)

Unfortunately, I haven't carried my Para much for the same reasons. I hate how it interferes with my pocket usage. I don't mind drawing tip down as much as I do scraping my hand on the sharp tang.

Vivi,

That's Brad's (Tricod) work from here at the forum.

I'm not sure if he still does mods or not. I think he may be concentrating a lot on his own stuff rather than mods but I'm not positive. I'll let him speak. :)

You might try STR...that is his handle here and on bladeforums. He has his own knifemaker forum over there with pics of his work. Give him a shout and see what he says.

Vivi, I remember a how to thread was posted on bladeforums over a year ago (in the spyderco section). That might be another option...

Wire clip on the Para looks great Vivi. It's a job well done.

Wire Clip - Available to Buy?

#9

Post by MossbergPump »

Is it possible just to buy a just a wire clip of the Caly 3 type or this Para mod kind? While a Spyderco fan and new forum member, I also have a Leatherman knife/tool that would be much improved by this clip. I haven't found anything on the Spyderco site nor does a Google search produce anything recognizable. Can anyone tell me how/where I might buy just one wire clip? Thank you.

I think you can contact Spyderco for a replacement wire clip. I have no idea how you'd install it on a Leatherman though. I'd love to see photos if you get it done.

Vivi - thank you.
Kimjune01- yes those are the clips.

Sorry if this is brand heresy, but please understand I'm trying to improve a low-cost utility tool by adding a high-end clip. This is my wierd tendency toward making silk purses out of sow's ears. Let me be plain here, this LM utility knife/tool cost less than $40. The clip is center screw mounted and it looks like my Spyderco wire clip would slip right in with maybe only a small a bit of tweaking. I don't want to remove the clip from my way more expensive Spyderco knife.

My goal is ultra low carry non-scary tool that has a decent knife, a phillips, and a flat blade screwdriver, i.e., my LM tool if it had a low carry clip.

The profile I'm striving for is the zero-knife showing profile of my way-too-huge Al Mar SERE 2000 with top-mounted fold over clip, but the closest I've seen in a feasible replacement for my LM is the Spyderco wire clip.

Thanks for your advice.

The problem is not with guns. It’s hearts without God, homes without discipline, schools without prayer, and courts without justice.

If you don't own a Paramilitary yet and are just looking to have the tip-up option, they easiest way is just to pick up a Paramilitary 2, as it has a (non-wire) clip that can be positioned for left or right hand carry, tip-up or tip-down. But if you already own a Para1 and want to modify it, keep reading.

Since the Para1 doesn't have a tip-up option, the two slots that the wire clip sits in have to be carefully milled out and then a hole drilled and tapped for the screw that holds the wire in. It's much easier to do this on a knife with full liners, as you can remove the scales and cut the slots all the way through the G-10, then reattach. The steel liners would then act as the backing surface that the clip presses snugly against. But since the Para1 doesn't have full liners, you have to be very careful not to make the slots too deep, for if you make the slots too deep and they go through the G-10, there's no backing material for the clip to seat against. Hope that makes sense.

I've seen this done with a dremel tool and you can just cut/grind the material out for the slots. It may not look beautiful, but it'll get the job done. You will also need a tap and die set to create a threaded hole for the clip screw to thread in to.
