Would you lend a Spyderco to someone

#1

Post by HunterAustralia »

Guys,

As a younger person i was very much a knife fan and would never lend or let somone use one of my knives in case they lost it/broke it or damaged it , now i am a bit more mature i like to think every time you show someone or let someone use your spyderco you might just be awakening a new knife/spyderco fan, however i have just bought a SPyderco Wegner in the last few weeks and i don't think i will let it out of my sight, i love it alot, interested in your thoughts, cheers David

In an emergency I would, but other than that, probably not. I mean, C,mon, is it really going to set someone back that much financially if they buy themselves a pocketknife? I may be a b@stard, but not lending your knife to someone who needs it, maybe, someday, will teach them that a knife is a useful (and sometimes essential) tool to carry with you.

Thats why I keep an Native in my backpack alot. If it gets lost or broken, or whatnot I know its not to expensive, nor will it be a big loss to me because I'm not really attached to my Native.

Hi HunterAustralia,

I felt the same way a year or so ago. Now with a largish EDC collection I did exactly that. I whacked 7 or 8 of my users (some brand new :p ) and shipped it around Australia for some of my mates to sample.

My disclosure to them all "Please use all of them, use but don't abuse, sharpen if you want to. And please make a post and give a small review on each blade, your thoughts good and bad all welcome !"

I believe the package I sent included:
Salt I PE
Mini Persian
Caly 3 PE
Ladybug S/S clipped onto a Maxpedition Keyper
Delica 4 PE
Dragonfly
Lava S/S
Kopa black micarta

Twas a great passaround, and the recipients gave good reviews. The standouts being the Mini Persian, Caly 3 and Kopa, with the others getting good feedback as well.

I'm thinking of doing another passaround to spread the fever :D

On the note of lending whatever SPydie you have on your person...yep ! no problems I watch them use it though until I know I can trust them not to damage the knife. Salt I is offered first as it is near indestrutible in many ways, Ladybug SE if the task is a small one, and for fun the Mini Persian gets whipped out for the younger borrowers :p
Cheers

Generally, I'm very reluctant to lend my knife to someone.

Back in college this guy asked to borrow my knife. I let him use the SAK I had at the time. When I looked over a few seconds later to see what he was doing, he was tightening the screws on his glasses with the tip of the main blade.  He handed it back soon after and I found the edge at tip of the blade to be slightly twisted.

So, today it depends on who it is, whether I trust them to be responsible, and what they plan on doing with the knife... and I pretty much ask, "What are you going to use it for?" If they need to cut something, I'm more likely to do the cutting for them. I guess if I know the person to be a knowledgeable and responsible knife handler that I might let them use my Delica FRN.

If it was an emergency situation and a citizen, LEO, firefighter, military member, or EMT needed a knife, I'd be more likely to let them use one of my :spyder: s.

Thats a awsome idea!! I would think it would be cool to trade EDC's to see other carrys that we had never thought of.

Short answer: No

Long answer: If it's a simple procedure, I'll kindly do it for them. After they marvel at my superior cutting power, I'll let them hold the knife to see what it's like. If it's an emergency, by all means yes.

I lent my old Ladybug to a friend and of course he tried to pry with it and I got it back tipless.

Guys,

some good thoughts on the subject, i just remembered why some people borrow knives, a couple of years ago i was with some guys and one asked to borrow the other guys knife, the 2nd guy said why don't you use your own knife and the 1st guy replied " i dont like to cut wire with my Knife", 2 years ago i lent my friend my prized Boker hunting knife for a few days and he looked after it and returned it in good condition, i guess alot depends on the circumstances, i remember an incident when i was kid and my Dad put a knife down near a tractor battery and the whole thing arced melting the blade on my dads knife, he wasnt too worried but if i had done that to a Spyder i would be very upset, cheers David

The only :spyder: I lend out is my Pacific Salt, which is pretty much indestructible. Still I had room mates who would borrow it for food prep, and use a metal baking tray as the cutting board or dump the knife in the sink open with other metal utensils when I explicitly told them not to do that. Always got the knife back with a thrashed tip and some kinks in the edge.

I didn't really mind the damage since my Pacific Salt is my beater knife and the damage could always be fixed by sharpening it. It was just annoying how some people have no clue how to use a knife and worse still, how they disregarded my instructions to use a proper cutting board or close the knife before dumping it in the sink.

That would definitely depend on who. I know some people that are totally careless and abuse everything they own. To them the answer would be, "no". Unless of course it was some kind of emergency.

Other more responsible people that take care of all and everything they own, of course the answer would be, more than likely "yes". It's all a matter of trust to me. :D

Depends on who, why, where, and on which Spydie too. :D But yes, it can be either a great way to introduce someone to Spyderco, or a very painful lesson in how totally inconsiderate and irresponsible some folks can be with borrowed items.

I did that with my caly3.... it came back shortly minus a tip.
I'd only had it a few weeks too - and since then I cant get into the caly3 experience.
Its my least looked at spydie - shame because its SE and numbered 69 too.

I keep meaning to get a sheepsfoot or rescue - they'd have to be the safest lenders for sure...

Would I lend a Spyderco to someone?

#18

Post by bh49 »

It depends on the person. To some people I would lend any of my users (even my Persian) for a while, to some people I would lend my knife for a few seconds only if I have to and be nervous that they can cut themselves or damage the knife, to some people I would never lend my knife under any circumstances.

Depends on the person and knife. I have been known to hook up a friend or two once I saw they were sportin a S&w with lots of play and no finger protection. Had a good bud let someone borrow his zdp caly jr the other day and when he got it back the blade was broke in half.

There are only two people I trust to lend a knife and both I recently gave them as gifts a 93mm rescue and a E4 CE. Anyone else I will just do the task for them.
