Gentleman’s knives

#1

Post by bh49 »

I have to confess: I am guilty. I love good-looking knives. (I think it is Ok for tool to look good). So in a while ago I figure out that I really like what I thought as gentleman’s knife: very attractive, excellent workmanship, nice upscale handle materials (preferably natural), medium to small size blade (2-2.75&#8221 ;) , most likely bolsters. Basically, it is piece of jewelry.
The best idea, IMHO I found on BF, belong to powernoodle, post #29:
powernoodle wrote:It is early Spring, and you are at a social gathering on the veranda of a Victorian mansion situated on 200 acres just outside of Charleston, SC. A cool spring breeze is bringing the smell of ribs from the grill.

The estate's owner, a young widow who recently inherited a shipping fortune of almost $800M, is clearly captivated by your charm and good humor. She approaches, accompanied by her twin sister. After a shy giggle, the widow asks if you might slice a lime for her Gin and Tonic.

You:

a) remove your BK7 from an inside-the-waistband sheath, causing the widow to retract in fear and drop her Gin and Tonic; her security personnel wrestle you to the ground and remove you from the estate; or,

b) you casually remove a small, finely crafted folder hand-made of exquisite and costly materials. You expertly slice the lime with its razor edge, and place a slice in the widow's drink. Your hand casually touches hers, precipitating her to blush. After an embarrassed pause, she asks if you might accompany her and and her sister on a private walking tour of the riding stables. You accept, and begin your stroll as the sun begins to set behind the adjacent hills.

If your answer is b), you were carrying a gent's knife.

But every day we can learn something new. Yesterday I was surfing Spyderco web site (what a big surprise), went to catalog and found category of Gentleman’s knives, which included:

CF Caly3,
SS Cricket
(plain and etched),
All Dragonflies, including FRN variant,
Endura Trainer (this may be an error, but may be not),
Kopas,
All Ladybugs,
Micro-Dyad,
Sage,
Spin,
Stretch2.

I was quite surprised to see some of these knives belong to this group and not finding Kiwi. I can be wrong, but most of them do not correspond to my image of gentleman’s knife. May be something like “office knife”, but not gentleman’s…..
How would you define this category and which current production Spyderco you would include?
IMHO I would include Kopa, Kiwi, and Micro-Dyad.

I would include the Viele 2.
It's bigger than most on your list but i like the look of the knife.

The kriss is my Gentleman's knife. :D

It's possibly my prettiest knife and has a lot of sentimental value.

I think Sal either has a strange sense of humor, or a very different notion of what constitutes a "gentleman's pocketknife". For my money, Spyderco has only ever made two knives I'd classify that way. Those two are the C27 Jess Horn and the C75 Kiwi. The CF Stretch and Caly 3 may perhaps be a hair more "civilized" looking and could be considered closer to "high end" than their respective Steel/Kraton and G-10 brothers, but they not my idea of gentleman's knives. I would classify the Sage that way as well. The Kopa, perhaps, but the inelegantly wide blade keeps it off my list. The rest are too silly to even discuss.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your respond. We are fairly close.
I come out to the list shorter than many of you because I was asking about current production; otherwise C27 Jess Horn Jigged Bone would be the first on my list.
May be we want to discuss and I certainly would love to hear your opinions how to define gentleman's knife or what kind of attributes the knife have to possess to qualify as gentleman's knife.

I've never claimed to be one either Tony. Then again I've never been a fireman, but I have some notions of what a fire engine should look like. ;) :D

IMHO the best example of a gentlemans knife currently in production would be the Kiwi. In particular the Jigged Bone Kiwi looks to be as close as you can get..... until they release a stag horn Kiwi :D

Unfortunately, like Tony, I wouldn't classify myself as a gentleman, and thus do not have a Kiwi. The closest I get to that is my Kopa collection. But as Paul says the blade is a tad wide and some wouldn't consider that 'gentlemanly' :p Maybe due to my Kopa habits, I could be sub-classified as a pseudo-gentleman :D !!!

So, only current stuff...
I think the ideal gentlemant's knife is missing from current Spyderco lineup.
I agree with Paul (again:eek :) that Kiwi is the closest one to be considered and that the shape of the blade makes Kopa somewhat less attractive as a gents knife even with their bolsters and high class scales.
And I am sorry but there is no engraver in the world that would make Ladybug look like gents knife to me
Having said that I consider Persians, Shabaria, JD Smith, Kris, Viele, Dodo (yes, Dodo!) and some other Spydercos exceptionally beautiful but would never call them gentelmant's knives. Upcoming Phoenix falls into the same category.
It is difficult to define elegance, but gentlemant's knife must be elegant. Clean lines, narrow blade under 3", VG10 or higher class steel, brass liners and/or bolsters would be a plus, only natural materials for the scales, not "too busy" engraving.
In its simplest and probably the most affordable form gentelemant's knife could look something like this:

Nice knife, but the Spydie-hole is missing. I didn't see the Polywog on the lists. Perhaps it is not considered sophisticated enough.

Well, I bought a SS Kiwi just for "dress up" a few weeks ago.

Now all I need to find is a rich widow woman.......... :D

I have to say I as well completely agree with Paul!.

The Kiwi is the only one that I think directly. And even that depends on the material. I actually remove the C27 Jess Horn because of the clip. I dont really feel that a gentlemans knife can gave a clip. Cause a true gentleman would never use it cliped IMHO... I think the micro Dyad could fit the catagory. I also think the Kopa could, assuming the clip were remove (And there were no screw holes) and the material was right. But on that same note I think the blade is a bit to wide...

As for the Caly 3, D-fly... others listed. Materials just say no in my book. and the Caly 3 even in CF is still intimidating. My fiancee things its more intimidating than my Para.

Just my 2 cents.

In my opinion the only 'gents knife' Spyderco ever made and still makes is the Kiwi. Perhaps their concept allows for a bigger knife overall but normally to me a gents knife is clipless and carried deep rather than like all the other Spydercos that come with a pocket clip. If you want to include the clipped ones it would allow for a larger knife due to the clip but to me the pocket clip by itself negates it ever being a true gents knife.

This seems to be a dissenting opinion, but I would assert that the Kopa is a gentleman's knife:

Here's my list:
Kiwi
Burgundy Micarta Jester
(my "holy grail" knife)
Kopa
C27 Jess Horn
Mini Persian

In the case of the Kiwi or Kopa, SS handles would preclude the knife being a gentleman's knife. In the case of the Kopa or Mini Persian, they should really be carried without the clip to constitute a gentleman's knife.

Honorable Mention:
Micarta Caly Jr (a little too big)
Ramco Laguoile (too big, but such a classic style it works)
Spin (unfortunately, it's stainless steel)
Carbon Fiber Cricket (the reverse-S looks a tad too aggressive)
