How do you open your Compression Lock??

#1

Post by McBain »

Hey everyone, I just got a PE Paramilitary, and I can't put the thing down!!! For some reason I keep trying different ways of opening/closing with the compression lock. I was just wondering, do most people depress the lock tab, and kinda "flick" open the knife?? Do you do the same when closing?? Or...do you open the knife normally with the spyder hole, then do some sort of "Finger Twister" type thing to depress the lock tab and close the blade controlling with your thumb or other finger?? Thanks.

Yes :D

Though one of my favorite closings is to turn the knife sideways and push the comp lock with your thumb, and use your first finger to push the blade past the lock

This is what I love about my Para. So many ways to use the lock. I'm still learning on mine. I have seen some videos on Youtube that show different ways to open and close it too.

For closing mine, I usually use the following:

1. Place thumb on comp lock, and index finger in :spyder: hole.
2. Squeeze lock tab with thumb
3. Guide the blade all the way closed with index finger still in hole.

This is one of the many ways I close mine. I use it the most because it seems the most natural from a regular forward grip on the knife.

Call me old fashion and safety conscious...

To open the Para-Military, I thumb it open with the Spyder Hole.

To close it, I use a two-hand procedure where I grip the Spyder Hole with the index finger and thumb, and the blade with the middle and third fingers, of one hand, while depressing the lock release with the index finger (supported on the opposite side of the handle by the thumb) of the other hand, then gently closing the blade with the hand gripping it.

I'm in no hurry to close the knife, and it saves on wear and tear.

What I do to open is to put my middle finger on the spyderhole and just flick it... It needs practice, I practiced on my Native w/c was really hard, so when I tried it on the Comp Lock it was just easy... it makes the knife look like an auto when you use this...
the action is not buttery smooth yet unlike my Yo, but I've only had this for 3 days, couple more days....

To close, I depress the comp lock w/ my index finger, then flick the knife down... If I flick hard enough it closes in full, but I just flick it slightly and guide the blade w/ my thumb resting on the jimping... :)

I carry a merlin. I push down on the lock with my middle right hand finger like you would pull a trigger and roll the merlin on my right thigh in a U-shaped pattern. It then is right there to slide in my right pocket. Dont reply with safty issues...been doin it for many years...many times a day. The merlins arch shape naturally rolls on my thigh...no chance of getting cut. Take care... :spyder: John.

i use my thumb to open blade via spyderhole in front of strangers, or thumb to flick blade open via spyderhole around friends.

then, to close, i pinch compression lock closed between index finger and my thumb bracing on the other side of the knife. i "flick" the knife gently and the blade falls out of the locked position, thus allowing me to close it fully with my index.

from open to closed in probably 2 seconds.

Thanks for all the replies!!! I am usually not in a hurry either when opening and closing, so in general I'll use my thimb to open, but I just thought it was a great design that allowed for multiple ways of opening/ closing.
I think I need to strengthen my fingers - I can only get the blade about 1/2 way open if I try to flick it with my middle finger!!! mabe loosening the pivot could help (I usually like to leave this at factory setting). The blade also seems so much bigger than the specs describe - I think Ihave a new favorite edc!!!

Most days I Spyder-drop it because it's tip down in my pocket and I am almost grabbing it by the hole to get it out of my pocket anyway. Other days I just thumb it open. I've never flicked it open but I do sit at home on the couch and open it about 10 different ways and close it and do it again and again. :)

My Para is in my pocket as I type this. :)

I've used about everything shown in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbCqHUbF8EA

By the way that's not my video.

If the situation called for it, yeah, I could close the knife in similar fashion as described by some in this thread... and until that situation arises, the two-handed method works just fine. :)

:spyder: My prefered MBC opening is to use a two handed gross motor opening, otherwise I play around with as many exotic ans silly openings as I can come up with. :spyder:
