SS Caylpso Jr. info wanted

#1

Post by kgriggs8 »

I just bought a SS SE CJ. I am a big fan of the FRN and micarta CJs so I bought it. I didn't know they made one in SS. Is it rare and or worth anything or is it more common then I thought?

PE SS caly jr.s are pretty highly sought after. SEs are more commonly found... they usually go for about $50 or so on ebay... about the same as street price at the time of release.

hang onto it, treat it well, and it'll become a collector's item in due time.

for the moment, though, afraid it's not any more "valueable" than it was when it was released.

Thanks for the info. I have not seen one in SS so I was just wondering it maybe it was worth a million dollars. With the value of some Spydercos on E-bay, it is worth asking before using it as a work knife and scratching it up.

I think I might use this one since I am becoming a big fan of SE knives. When I started in knives, I thought PE was the only way to go. Then I saw that a CE was great if the blade was long enough (3.5" or more). Now I finally see that SE can be just as good or better in many tasks. I have a SE Military and Pac Salt and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

You likely noticed, but I find it peculiar that the SS Caly Jr. are the only Calypsos that are not flat ground. The are hollow ground I believe. Enjoy it. I have a SS PE Caly Jr. I carry occasionally. BTW, did you win this recently on Ebay. I was the high bidder on one and got snipped at the last minute. I had forgot about it and did not watch it end. If so congrats, for sneaking past me. Good price as well. :)

Not on E-bay. I got it on a gun forum. I didn't even notice that it was not flat ground! It is a much different knife then.

I should have it in a day or three. I wonder what I will think of it. To tell the truth, it seems like it is the anti CJ. It is SS so it is heavy, it is hollow ground so it probably won't slice as well. I may not like it. I have not liked any SS Spydercos but I think the thin CJ might be a good one.

We will see. In my search for knives I like, I have come across a few that just didn't do it for me. That is how we know what we like, by knowing what doesn't work.

That's a very apt description of it. Although lately I've given some thought to having a PE one full flat ground by Tom Krein, then engraved. As for rarity, they are not overly common, but not popular either. Think John Jensen had the SE ones available at closeout prices up until less than a year ago. That's a fairly reliable indicator of low collector interest.
