What's your sharpest spydie?

#1

Post by tonydahose »

i did a quick search with "sharpest" in the search field and it has been almost 2 years since we have had one of these threads. there have been alot of new :spyder: s since then so i thought i'd start new one. this is a three part question. what is the sharpest out of the box spydie you have had? which spydie have you personally or had a professional (krein regrind?) gotten to be the shapest? did that knife beat out any of the new out of the box razor sharp spyies? out of the box i am guessing something with zdp (stretch, calyIII, jess horn) or one of the newer millies will come out on top. for me it is a toss up between the ZDP's caly III and calypso. my sharpest spydie is my temperance plain edge. it was my SD knife next to the bed and never was used to cut much of anything but i gave it lots of TLC on the ultrafine rods and it shows. so what are your sharpest :spyder: s?

a good question. My sharpest would have to be the caly3 or ukpk. I am getting a Caly CF next week, so that should take the
lead.
Top :spyder:s : Caly 3, Stretch, Millie, Manix 2, Police, Kopa, Polliwog, Meerkat, Chinook III, and SuperHawk.

the Jess Horn is pointy but no wear near as sharp as the Caly's. My absolute sharpest one is Calypso Jr. ZDP

Currently its between the Caly 3, Millie or Yojimbo. The Yoyo probably takes the cake. They are all scary sharp that I sometimes close them 2 handed  ROFL....only sometimes !

For me, its my SS Dragonfly ATS-55.
It can easily compete with any knife I have.
Thin edge, good geometry and a good steel, that's all it takes, and a good heattreat.

Hmmm, out of the box sharpest would probably be my ZDP Caly Jr. or my Merlin in ATS-55. The Merlin actually took a nice slice off the tip of my finger when I got careless closing it one-handed...the blade did not hesitate one tiny bit.

As far as the edge I personally put on, I would have to go with either my BG-42 or D2 Millie. Both blades take a super scary, ultra fine edge. I took my D2 Millie from not able to shave, to able to literally split a hair in half longways along the shaft.

1) C52PBKE Calypso Jr. Black Handle ZDP189
C113CFPE Caly 3 CarbonFiber ZDP-189
C38PBRG Jess Horn (red) laminated ZDP-189
(yes, 3-layers ZDP-189/420 blades are sharpest :spyder: )

2) Old C52SBK Calypso Jr. Black Handle, serreted edge regrinded to plain edge (forced renewal of second-hend knife)

3) Yes, but not for a long time. ZDP-189 is harder than VG-10, of course.

The Sharpest Spydie I've gotten out of the box (and my current sharpest sharp Spydie) is my CF/ZDP Caly3. It's so sharp that I almost feel bad cutting things with it. :o

The Spydie that I've gotten sharpest myself is my Yang kitchen knife; although I've nearly surpassed that level with my PE Caly3. :D

Sharpest out of the box was my Moran fixed blade. My sharpest EDC is usually a tie between my ZDP Caly Jr. and my Mini-Manix. The Manix takes a very good edge. I'm impressed.

:spyder: out of the box was caly jr. and street breat, maybe the WT karambit. By my own hand I've gotten my strong side Yoji sharper than anything else. :spyder:

Out of the box for me was a Caly III (PE VG-10). A very close second tho was an E4 SE !!! Each of those serrations were supa dupa sharp!!! Almost so that I couldn't cut using the whole serrated blade, one of the serrations would catch, and run the entire length of cardboard!!

Out of the box: ZDP Caly Jr
Gotten sharpest: Native PE
No the re-sharpened Native didn't beat any of my new :spyder:

Good question Tony. It's not surprising how many Caly Jr's show up as sharpest.

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: I would say the Sharpest out of the box Spyder I ever owned is a tie between my Para/SE/DLC, and my Ti-Atr/pe  As for getting one reground, that I've never done. The 3 that I've resharpened the Sharpest was my mini Manix, my Endura1/G-2/SE, and my fg frn D4/se  I havn't bought a new knife, sinse I bought my Stretch2, and I did not have to touch up the edge on that, at all  :D

Out of the box, most of my Spydies are more or less on the same level of really scary sharpness, with a few models sub-par.
(Unfortunately, the ZDP Delica was among them. I tried to sharpen it, but with limited success. And after cutting a pizza (!), even this was gone. Even putting a zero grind to it by Jürgen Schanz (our "Tom Krein" :) ) didn't help much. By now, I'm afraid that something is wrong with the blade steel.)

BTT:
The sharpest spydie I remember OOTB was one of my - MULEs ! Somebody in the factory did a really great job at the belt grinder. The edge seems to be a bit delicate though; when I will finally manage to put a handle to it and give it a sheath, I will start to test that thoroughly :o

Once used, my ZDP Endura lost its good sharpness relatively quick and I wasn't able to get it back to its initial shrarpness. So off it went to Jürgen Schanz for a "Military-Style" mod. It came back scary, scary sharp, on the same level as the MULE. And this time, it is easier to keep it that way. On my request, he changed the edge angle to 20-25° incl. I think this makes a huge difference!

Anybody else impressed with the sharpness of his/her MULE?
